I used to go climbing around Gower with my late brother in law in his Mk1 with a cartridge player playing Steeleye Span and his belief that anyone turning right in front of him on the narrow roads would always move out of the way before he lifted.

I used to have a white Harrier before moving joining the dark side and driving an HS Chevette, don't laugh, technically way ahead of an Escort and enormous fun with a capital F especially around Epynnt with the black Mk2 against Waldergard in a Quattro.

Anyway, years move on with kids etc. so time to chill out and spend some money.

Instead of a holiday I wanted a Mk2, would have preferred a Mexico but ended up with an RS2000.

I bought it through a local Agency supposedly specialising in Escorts (work it out - South Wales - Agency for Escorts).
Unfortunately what I bought turned out to be a dogs dinner with the so called expert liberating the LSD and tyres for himself before turning me over - sorry, turning it over to me.
P*ss*s me off to see an article in October Classic Ford that might be considered to approve their work, but really they should be avoided at all costs.

Two years later YJC 11W is nearly ready for the road again, MOT is done, Tax is done so in a couple of days I will be out and about.

        The Professionals.

Having a similar name to one of the main characters got me a lot of stick at school, but I didn't care because he was driving the best car in the programme.

        R Doyle !!!
        Cheers Rob.

Hi, I have not posted much here before, but this topic is too good to resist. This sort of question makes you sit back and think and for me I have to go a long way back.

I have been a car enthusiast since I can remember and I would go around the main dealers in Cardiff on my push bike picking up brouchures. Ford were my favourite and I wanted a Capri 3.0S when I grew up (still waiting for that!). I have a photo of a terracotta RS2000 in the showroom at UBM Ford Newport Road and an RS2000 Brouchure that I picked up myself off the dealer shelf (memories ... wish I had 10 now)

Got into Escorts big time when a mate bought a MK1 1.3L which we modified cosmetically, but he wanted more power (dont we all) so I mentioned that there was something called a Mexico .... he went out an bought one from a mate in the RAF. That was the start, I was 16 at the time and another mate was road rallying a Harrier so we got into rallying and I sent most of my time in College going off watching Escorts in the forrests of Wales.

Bought a Mk1 1300 Sport as my first car (rotten to the core) then the car I had been saving for ever for (and building up no claims) and the car I should never of sold a Signal Yellow MK2 RS2000, CAB 123W 1981 reg. Had that car for about 18 months when I lived in Peterborough, sold it just before I got married (1988) to buy an RS1600i. I have had continuous RS ownership since, but thay have been the Front wheel drive type which we dont talk about here.

Finally got back into a Mk2 in 1999 when I built an RS2000 Rally car with a friend, should be out an about at track days in it in 2005.

I also have another MK2 project on the go right now... cant believe the prices on bits ... wish I had hoarded when I had the chance!

So I am old ... but I take comfort from the fact that I am not as old as Phil Teear...hey Phil.

Sorry to bore you all, but if you are going to post you might as well make it a big one I spose!!

          Regards, Ian

The metalwork teacher at school had a rally preped RS1600 with bubble archs, he would blast into the car park with all guns blazing, first seed planted.
I was given an MOT failure, a 1100 J reg super, which I learnt to drive in, around the back gullies to the house. Loose gravel, RWD...roots now forming.
One Sunday morning while doing my paper round a load of group 4, RS1800's came down the Hagley Road, Birmingham, on there way to West Midlands Safari park after just leaving Sutton Park. It was the RAC rally.
Sapling well and truely growing now.
Use to pop in Bristol Street Motors in Birmingham where I saw a Signal yellow RS2, job done, I was hooked.

                    My what an old thread...

This thread was coming up 8 years old before you woke it back up RSDC1. I wonder how many of the former posters still have an Escort?

FWIW I was inspired by my Mum and Dad buying their RS2000 in 1980, a black 1979 Custom. My first car was a 1.3 Mk2 Escort, but I always looked enviously at their RS2000 which, by then was a summer use only car. Eventually they decided they weren't using it enough and offered it to me for a grand in 1995 on condition that if I sold it we'd split the 'profit'. I've had it ever since, though it's been off the road over 10 years due to needing inner wing rail repairs that I didn't want to bodge. Might get it back on the road later this year.

When I was 19 I had a 67 Vauxhall Viva SL90, bit of sporty touch about it but cheap to insure. It was these little 1159cc engined cars that Jack Brabham modified slightly to make what was called the Brabham Viva.

Then I fell in love with the new Mk1 1600GT Capri, Sunset Red, Vinyl Roof, with a rally pack which I started saving up for, it was about £1365 on the road.

While I was saving up for that a 4 month old facelift Mk1 Escort Sport in Daytona Yellow, option Cloth Reclining Seats, came into the garage as a part ex against a new Avenger estate. I wanted that and had to fight with someone in the office to get it as I said I would have it first. Once I was in an Escort Sport I began to learn about the RS's and so I would want one for my next car.

I did buy another Sport before I got there though, and by that time the new Mk2 had already been introduced. It was quite different from all the others, fitted with a twin headlighted nosecone, luxury interior, and would be there attracting my attention. I remember seeing a Signal Orange one go past my mums shop, it had the bold RS2000 on the back quarters, it looked great and I had to have one. By 1979 I had bought my first RS2000, 14 months old, in Signal Yellow, from City Speed in Gloucester. I felt I had finally made it in life!

                        Tim.
