  • Speedo for MOT

    Hello all,

As it is now time to start thinking about the dash etc, do you NEED a speedo for MOT, or can you get aay with a Rev counter only?

    Thanks

Neither speedo or rev counter is needed for MOT

        BUT !!!!!

A motor vehicle which is capable of being driven at a speed exceeding 20 mph is required to be fitted with a speedometer [Regulation 35(2)(c) of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, as amended.

So MOT pass - drive out of MOT station and Plod can do you !

As a tester if there is no speedo or in the case of some Vauxhalls where you cannot read the odometer due to blown dash bulb then MOT cert reads "mileage not stated"

I had a mk1 wich didn't have a speedo cable fitted, the MOTs were the same mileage for 2 or 3 seasons running!!

Yeah, where I've worked in the past I've never heard of a car failing on a busted speedo cable /head etc but can't a tester fail it on the "if it's fitted it has to work" principle. You're not allowed to take off wheel trims etc to find out if the brake pads are worn out but if there are no trims or can see from underneath that the pads have had it you "can" fail it on that too, can you not?

BTW, get your speedo sorted driving without a proper speedo is not just illegal it's dodgy

                      Nope !

As for removal of covers etc

for example a snotty MKIII Escort comes in with plastic Turbo type sill covers fitted

Most MOT testers will already know that under the covers it is as rotten as a pear BUT we cannot fail the car !

To use the CYA (cover your arse) principle a tester will issue an advise note stating vehicle presented with sill extensions fitted

Basic rule is - If you cant see it then you cant fail it !

Also if a car fails an MOT because a wheel stud is broken or nut is missing

Customer then goes away and fits a wheel trim (that hides the fact that a nut/stud is missing) then returns for retest

                        Car then passes the retest
