Track days

Cause i am thinking along the lines of track days for the mk2 i was wondering how many of you guys do track days and how many drive there cars there or trailer it.
Does the track day insurance cover getting you home if you had an off etc.
I am a total track virgin so any ideas or pointers would be of great help

Track Days - Where do we begin ?

My first track day (and maybe loads of others were the same)

1. fill tank up of fuel

2. Check tyre pressures

3. Check brakes (if pads 3/4 worn then change em)

4. Give car a good once over (spanner check !)

5. Drove to Brunters

6. Get helmet and cover arms and legs

7. Drove car well outside my limits - hit nothing - spun a couple of times

8. Drove home hooked on trackdays - the rest is history

9. Day/Day insurance does NOT cover trackdays ! If you take it easy and abide by the rules and do not do a circuit trackday first time out then you will/should be fine. One off trackday insurance is available but can cost as much as the trackday.

10. Look out for 2005 Old Skool Trackday Bruntingthorpe Leicester (well I had to plug my event dint I ? - lol)

Do more trackdays and then you can do your own 1. - 10. as above and talk/question/listen and learn off other trackday veterans (not all trackday veterans talk much sense though !! - lol)

A good post Vinny.

I've done 3 in Brunters driving over and back from the West coast of Ireland, in my Mk2 and 1 in er.....another more modern car

I reckon it's the best fun for the money, and suit The RS mk2's (all Escorts really) well as they are quite zippy, and handle well, even in stock form.

The trick is to prepare thoroughly.

Year 1. I cooked my brakes, and the long haul home was "interesting".

Year 2. I broke the windscreen, and had to change the alternator. Turned out to be only a dirty connection, but I now have a spare.

Year 3, this year, it ran perfectly.

I reckon drive quick by all means, but don't thrash it if you want to drive it home afterwards. Start relatively slowly, and build up from there.

Do 5 or 6 laps on a session, and let the car cool after each.

Of all the parts I'd say the brakes get the worst hammering. I've replaced pretty much everything and the only differences from stock are braided hoses and fast road pads. They make a huge difference.

Your road driving and car control will definately benefit.

The other things are the people and the craic. The guys on here and Turbosort are genuine, friendly, and helpful. On track it's non competitive(ish) and well run. Nobody will punt you off the track because you haven't got at least 200bhp. Drive within your own, and your cars abilities.

If you're going to do a trackday do the Old Skool one in June, why not make a full w/e of it?

Set up your tent, get ****ed, talk rubbish, and have a bbq. Perfect.

cheers for the time to post your experiences ders, the more i think about it the more i wanna get the mk2 sorted as a track day come weekend toy and the mk1 as i nice standard take the family out for a bimble type of car :compress:

I run the track days at Castle Combe for the S.E.O.C.
Its not too far for you to come for a first go, as everyone has said be prepared to be hooked.WILL RING YOU SOON.

Dave, how about getting the events hooked in to the RSOC & Dominion (or some other scheme) as there is cover for RSOC track events.

The RSOC Dominion scheme has builtin Track day cover for RSOC events like National day & the events at Goodwood, all within the deal

Sorry Kel and dont wish to diss the RSOC/Dominion tie up

but here is how I see it relevant to my car (enough on here know spec !)

Dominion = apprx £450 (no cover for driving to and from work and 3000 miles limit - no agreed valuation as I am unable to get an RSOC valuation as I class my vehicle as Modified ! )

AON = £155 FULL comp cover no mileage limit and agreed valuation

Dominion ONLY cover 2 x RSOC indemnified track events per year and I managed 6 track events last year (not all were RSOC) !

Hence the reason for any track virgin to do an airfield event first then progress onto circuits - learn to drive first with loads of run off and open spaces !

Dave not a problem mate, only reason I went with them that it was convient at the time, but I will be moving once the first year is up to AON. Couldnt find the details for AON any where, until I join RSMK2C.

vinny, i want to give track day driving another go, havnt done it for about 8 years. let me know if next year, you do one, ill come up and do it myself, that way, if either of us stuff it, or brake down, we'll still get home.......LOL
