  • Long first gear kit

Has anyone else on here tried the 2.98 long first gear kit available for the type 9 five speed box?
Just bought one from Burtons (excellent service as always), getting my box rebuilt so decided to try this..will let you know the results

    with a 185/60/13 and a 3.54 diff it will give you and extra 6mph @ 6000 revs. 37mph as opposed to 30.

Are the remaining ratios still "standard" ?

If so then my only concern would be a short gap between 1st into 2nd and then "standard" long gaps between 2nd - 3rd, 3rd - 4th and so on

Such a tall 1st with "gappy" other gears may be a bit awkward round town

      Keep us informed

I will not be using a 3.54 diff as acceleration is too slow and top gear is like overdrive. I intend to try it with my 3.77 that is currently fitted and then with a 3.9 to try and find the best combo.

Dave, i am curious as to how it will work as i considered the ratio gaps as you pointed out.
        Will let you know.

My latest 5 speed SC/CR gearbox that is soon to be fitted has the following ratios

          1st - 2.48:1
          2nd - 1.69:1
          3rd - 1.27:1
          4th - 1:1
          5th - 0.87:1

I run 13" wheels with 185/60 or slicks with 16x53

          diff ratio is 3.89:1

Works well on track and still driveable on the road
