You could try a system restore, to a date you knew it was running fine. Its in control panel, Backup and Restore, sytem restore.

                ctrl+alt+del

look in the task manager to see what is using up the resources

maybe an anti-virus or firewall or two conflicting, it's often the case.

never have two anti-virus programmes running at the same time, make sure windows firewall is switched off if you've another firewall installed.

I know it's stating the bleeding obvious but don't know how your computer's set up

Wow that online checker worked for me, found 260 programs. Cheers!

Is your PC slow just on the internet or when using all programs ?

Check to see if you have any incomplete vista updates!

If you have switched off the PC or lost your ISP during a download, the PC can go a bit mental trying to find the down load!

Do a manual "Check for windows updates"!

                              PC

                              Hi Paul,

The new car is coming along nicely !!

The most efficient way to sort out a PC that has started to run slow is a full reinstall, ie format the hard drive and reinstall windows.

I know this sounds a bit extreme, but this will get rid of all the crap that we get from the net.

I suggest you invest in a usb external hard drive, these are great plug into usb port and then in windows explorer, just drag all your cherished files over. An example of what I mean is here, 500gb for £79.99

I have nothing to do with Maplin by the way, just used this as an example.

If reinstalling windows seems a bit daunting, there will be someone you know who could start the process with you, or maybe the vendor has a simple disk program that leaves it back to the factory settings when you purchased it.

Again, I know this seems a bit of a big job, but trust me this is THE only way to get it back to the original speed.

                              Hope this helps,

                              All the best,

                              Martin.
