I really do admire a right involved resto but as a personal thing and not having the skill to do such a resto i'd be quite happy with a re-shell, BUT! when that then gets passed off as origional i have a problem, it wouldn't put me off buying one as long as i knew (and saved a few quid).
I don't really see the difference between a s/h shell and a new ford one TBH, still a different shell either way, each to their own and all that, it'd be a boring world if were all the same

It never ceases to amaze me why people seem to want to do things to please OTHER people or fear scorn if they do something "their" own way.
It is really down to the individual but at the end of the day, unless you have a brand new shell, putting all your bits and ID onto a 1100L is ringing.
Having said that, the bodyshell is just a part of the car that can wear out like anything else and replacing it does not take the "soul" away from the car. In the same way that if your Kent or Pinto decides to spit a conrod through the block and you have to replace the "original" engine does not take the "soul" away from the car........... it is just a part that has become un-servicable.
It is YOUR car .................... do what the hell you like with it and stuff what anyone else thinks!!!!Banned from the RSOC BB a second time and once again serving the longest ban .

I'm also a bit confused as to why a shell is referred to as a "service item"?
A shell never wears out does it? Once your car's shell in in such a bad way as to be literally "rusted out", having serious stress fractures, or has been heavily shunted it's pretty much time to scrap it.
The only reason for not scrapping a car is that it's resale value is still high enough to warrant a repair, i.e. less than 3 years old (in most cases)

BTW, whilst it is of course an accepted fact that powertrain components wear out and are changed, I think most people would prefer to buy a car that has the original components that were fitted at the factory regardless of whether those be the shell or the rear axle.
