  • Chassis numbers......

    Hi all,
Going to view a MK2 Mex that the owner says looks like it has had new inner wings fitted,he thinks this because he says they are mint

Just need to know what the crack is regarding the chassis number that is usaully on the strut top, cause this car hasn't got it.

Viewed a MK2 RS2 a couple of weeks back, this car was the same,no chassis number.

Is there alot of MK2's like this now because of having new panels fitted??
Is it a big no no and should I steer clear of cars without it???

    Thanks for any info/advice

              Thanks

What have people done off here that have replaced strut top plates/inner wings as regards the chassis number????

What else is there that can be checked as regards ID of the car, just the rivet on plate on the front panel????

The RS2 I viewed was Signal yellow,I peeled abit of paint off the chassis just in front of the rear spring front mount and it was red underneath
According to the seller it has allways been Signal yellow

                  LOL

This was the RS2 I viewed:

Few things put me off it,needed welding to pass sill, cracks with rusty stains running from them on A pillars, all yellow paint on underside cracked and peeling off revealing the surface rust they had painted over ,strut top plates had been 'smoothed' over into inner wings, wings were welded to scuttle panel, rear arch lips had been totaly cut off, various rust bubbles on body work.
Had £8000 spent on it four years ago

Will post pics/link to the mex once I have viewed it!

A stamped chassis number is NOT a requirement on ANY vehicle manufactured before 1st August 1980

Vehicle identification number - a vehicle identification number must be permanently displayed and legible on a vehicle first used on or after 1 August 1980

A vehicle not stamped after the above date will fail MOT !

                    Taken from here

Have edited my original post as I found the correct date and link to Government website

The key word used is Permanent !

                          Rivetted on is NOT permanent

                          Dashboards are not permanent either

                          Stamped into shell/chassis is permanent

Hi, Mine as not got numbers on the strut top plate, but does have a plate. I was told if you got a new shell from ford it did not have strut tops stamped.
