    quote from Quaife http://www.quaife.co.uk/index2.htm

    The Ultimate Differential

The QUAIFE Automatic Torque Biasing Differential enables your car to accelerate quicker and corner faster.

How? By getting the power to the ground!

The QUAIFE Differential powers both drive wheels under nearly all conditions, instead of just one.

With an ordinary open differential, standard on most cars, a lot of precious power is wasted during wheel spin under acceleration. This happens because the open differential shifts power to the wheel with less grip, along the path of least resistance.

The QUAIFE, however, does just the opposite. It senses which wheel has better grip, and biases the power to that wheel. It does this smoothly and constantly, and without ever completely removing power from the other wheel.

In cornering, while accelerating out of a turn, the QUAIFE biases greater power to the outside wheel, reducing inside-wheel spin. This allows the driver to begin accelerating earlier, exiting the corner at a higher speed.

The QUAIFE also controls loss of traction when the drive wheels are on slippery surfaces such as ice and snow or mud, providing the appropriate biased traction needed to overcome these adverse conditions. The QUAIFE Differential provides constant and infinitely variable drive. Power is transferred automatically without the use of normal friction pads or plates seen in other limited-slip designs.

The QUAIFE'S unique design offers maximum traction, improves handling and steering, and puts the power where it is needed most. A definite advantage whether on the track or on the street.

The QUAIFE is extremely strong and durable and since the Quaife is gear operated, it has no plates or clutches that can wear out and need costly replacement.

The QUAIFE is great for street driving or racing. Racers don't have to put up with locking mechanisms or spools that tear the steering wheel out of their hands when cornering. Because it behaves like an open differential during ordinary driving, street drivers will have trouble telling it's there until pushing the cars limits.

Except that a Quaife is NOT an LSD! It is, as they are very careful to claim but many retailers are not, an ATB. It will not and cannot give the performance of a true LSD when one rear wheel of a live axle is very lightly loaded or off the ground (as it will be driving tight hairpins quickly).

I and all the hillclimb Escort crowd rate Tranx. They also, I believe, actually make the "original Ford" ie. Timken lsd but I think the latter is only marketed through the Lotus Cortina Spares Centre. Its a complicated commercial arrangement. Both have web sites. From experience, a TranX can be "harsher" ie. it can come in with a bit more of a snatch. Probably related to that is the fact I dont know anyone who has broken one but I know several who have broken the "Ford" type, even with steel casing and end plate. Back to the usual question: what are you going to use your car for? A quaife will be good for nearly all road use (but I have spun the inside rear wheel with one on fast corners like Magwick at Goodwood, not just on hairpins). Kit car people (particlarly with IRS) hate TranX and love Quaife diffs but Escorts are not the same!

                Hi Nige,
I was told to avoid the ATB and stick with a steel "plate type" such as Tranx by everyone i spoke to. As a result i bought a Tranx, who supplied it and fitted it for a fast road set up, with a 3.89 cwp to suit the 5 speed box in my RS2000. Here`s a pic,

not that its the "professional - adult etc" approach, but what would be better for donuts/cowboy tomfoolery etc? atb or normal plate type?

i tried a atb in my mexico great on the road , not so good on track and even worse for doughnuts !!!!! i have a tran x plate type now fitted in my car the stronger type , its a lot more consistent it makes more noise but in my opinion its a better product

but if u only ever going to drive up back roads on a sunday or plenty of motorway work i would definatley buy a quaife atb.
