Real reg no WHO6.
The "landmark" Barry Hinchcliffe rally video "From Harrogate it Started" includes Who songs like "I Can See for Miles" - cleverly used over shots of Dodd Forest in the Lake District (highest stage in England? - certainly the one with the most frightening drops, which is partly why it isn't used now). In one sequence (which may have been staged specially at Woburn) Timo Makinen's Escort passes a Mini Clubman with a much lower start number.
Driver of the Mini was Stan Griffin, a regular low budget competitor and a policeman from Hampton in Middlesex. I think the story is that his best mate at school was a kid by the name of Keith Moon. The irony of one of the music world's wildest comsumers of substances having a mate who became a cop.....
The Who (although I believe the other three were kind of carried along by Moon) paid for a new rally car for Keith's mate Stan - a full spec iron block Group2 RS1600 in a fetching shade of pink. You can just about make out his name on the driver's door in the photo. The Who also sponsored a stage on the 73 Welsh International and appeared at the start of it. This was Penmachno north -and anyone who knows it will appreciate just how steep and difficult the approach is and that it wasn't a place you could drive a limmo up to.
Stan Griffin/Chris Dickenson continued long after the Who lost interest in rallying, using a blue Group 1 RS2000 Mk1 in the mid 70s. Keith Moon by then was not really inhabiting the same planet and the more bizarre stories coming out of his place at Thorpe began (Thorpe Park was just a gravel pit then).

As I've just said to MexicoMark, who asked by PM, yes, as I've just sent it to someone in Portugal. (PM me an Email address, but the copy I have on PC is a bit small and may need a magnifying glass).
I've just noticed no.23 on the page above! (reg no looks familiar but can't recall who was 'aving a larff).
