  • Todays 5 speed T9 tip of the day

As I have stripped my new 5 Speed Tran-X SCCR gearbox to fit bearings and overhaul it etc

I am having a threaded hole machined into the main casing on the underneath.

This is because Ford never had a gearbox drain plug fitted !

So I am fitting my own

Alternatively!!!!!!..........Sunday, I syphoned all the oil (2 litres) out of the T9 gearbox and replaced with fresh oil. I was in a cheap shop in town a week ago and bought a large pump for unblocking kitchen sinks, a bit like a large syringe, cost me £2. I fitted a small plastic pipe to it and used that to start the syphoning, it worked a treat.

            Here what I normally use

Also great for syphoning cars via the fuel filter ! lol

OH and so easy to do an engine oil change without a ramp

I've got an air operated one of those, syphons the oil from the sump via the dipstick tube.

Takes about 2 mins and no need to jack the car up
              Cheers Rob.

Not knocking your reasoning on this Dave...just that I've re-cased sooooo many competition 4 and 5 speed (more 4 speed for some reason ) Ford 'boxes due to cracks in the maincase, that the last thing I'd recommended would be to whack another hole in it and create a further stress rasier in the casing. I could be being pessimistic though, and all might be fine in the long run....

thought as much myself, as cast don't like having holes drilled in it, but if not used for competition surely ought to survive

Fair comment but I am going to use either a 1/8" or a 1/4" BSPT thread so (hopefully) it shouldnt weaken casing too much
