    Right then..... the plot thickens!!!

Just got back from a day of head scratching ...... Took the head off this morning, to find that the existing head gasket seemed fine, however the head bolts did seem to come undone a bit too easily?? Everything else seemed to be in order too, pistons, bores, valves and head all ok?? So we decided to put a a new gasket on anyway (thanks again Mr Frost), torqued everything down correctly, put it all back together and fired her up......... No rattling this time but still loads of white/grey smoke, sounding rough and breathing heavily through the crank breather , Re-tested the compression, and basically no difference from last night! 1 @ 90, 2&3 @ 70 and 4 @ 120, I think they should all be at 130-140. Anyway, after numerous phone calls and rodders trying everything he could think of, we reckon it's the rings that are the problem!!

The strange thing is the engine was running fine for the first 60 odd miles after being fired up, it seems odd that it wasn't doing this from the beginning??? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Depressed
    Neil.

        Engine trouble

Hi Mate have you checked the oil level ? (might sound daft) I recently bought a mk6 escort gti. Took it easy for a few hundred miles then i gave it a bit of stick from a junction and noticed a load of white smoke behind me. This happened even worse about half a mile up the road. Turned out to be far to much oil in the engine. HTH Good luck. Mick.

I've had a slightly crap week as well. 18 months ago I bought back plates to fit the front brake discs, and recently I bought a set of wheel bearings for both front wheels. I sprayed the back plates to a lovely finish in smoothrite, and last Sunday commenced to fit everything. The back plates would not match up the holes so I redrilled the holes and widen the large centre hole, then they would not fit flush as the pressing would not fit around the square shape behind the stub axle, so I had to hammer and shape the pressing to the RS shape, apart from some extra filing to fit the brake calliper. I got the back plates fitted with a not so nice paint finish, I think they had given me ordinary Mk2 ones. I then find out that I've had the wrong bearings supplied to me (Mk3 Cortina), so after all that work late at night I had to put the whole lot back together, to await being removed again when I get the right bearings. I have confidently got the right ones now and I am awaiting another free day to have a go at it.....this is just part of the fun of keeping something different going.

            Hi Mick,

Yep the oil levels fine. (wish it had been too much)!

Have basically decided that the whole lot's gotta come out this week, will then send the bottom end away to be inspected and then get it all re-built again........

However there is a plan B!............. A couple of months ago, a mate of mine offered me a new all-steel 2.2 pinto (never been in a car - only dyno run) for quite sensible money, but I turned it down, because I couldn't really justify it. However just spoken to him again, and he's still got it!! Will let me try it in the car first to see if I like it, he's moved a bit on the price ...... so I could then get my engine re-built and sell it to part fund the new lump........... what do you all reckon??
