  • Bad week for Notts Mk2's!!

I'm sure most of you have seen the grief that Kev's had with his Mex this week, well I think it's catching!!

On Tuesday Rodders and me took our cars down to Northampton Motorsport to have some work done, mine was for a geometry check, a set up on the rollers, few other minor jobs to finish the car off and get it MOT'd. Rodders was for a set up on the rollers to sort his fuelling out and to find out why it wouldn't rev above 6k. Unfortunatley Rodders engine turned out not to be too healthy and at one point he thought he was looking at a £4k re-build at Jondell!....... Luckily though it turned out only to be a broken valve spring, which should be easily rectified.

I in meantime, am sat back thinking i'm glad i'm not having the grief that these boys are having, and that i'm going to get to drive my newly re-built car this weekend!!!

Picked the Mex up this afternoon, nearly everything that i'd asked for had been sorted - although they couldn't do a power run on the rollers, as it sits that low, that at high revs the exhaust was touching the workshop floor and melting the paint!! (on the floor not the car)! So off I trot up the M1 in it, happy as larry, the cars going really well, feels very tight, getting loads of looks in it and all's well with the world!!

After about 30 odd miles I pull off the M1 onto the A46, when suddenly I start to hear a loud rattling noise, I back off immediately, the noise goes, but comes back at anything over half throttle. So I pull over into a layby, just as I start to loose power and the engine starts to cough and splutter..... turn it off and loads of white smoke pours out of the exhaust......... headgasket?? The engines only done about a thousand miles since it was rebuilt, but has been sat in my workshop for nearly 2 years....

Call Rodders, by chance he's on his way to Leicester to pick up his bellhousing from Martyn, so he rolls up half an hour later while I sit and wait to be recovered by the AA. Out comes the compression tester (he never leaves home without it apparently)!: No 1's @ 90, 2 & 3 are @ 70 & 4's @ 120, no sign of any oil or water leaks, rads still full and no sign of any water mixing with oil, so we're hoping that the gaskets gone between 2 & 3 and not caused any more damage??

To cut an even longer story short, I finally got recovered an hour later by a contract recovery firm, who would only take me back to LFE services (2 mile away), where I would then have to wait probably another hour for the proper AA to roll up, who would then take me back to my worshop (another 1.5 miles further up the road)!! After alot of "your aving a larf's" were exchanged, I bunged him 20 quid and he took me all the way back!!

Finally got home 20 mins ago, knackered but i'm picking a new gasket up of Kev tomorrow morning and we're going to try and sort it for Sunday!! May still see you all at the pod!

Finally to top it all off, just had a call from my mate chris, who's competing in the Pirelli today in a Mk2, and he suffered a broken rocker today on the 3rd stage, whislt leading his class! He's dropped back to 2nd now, but they've got a whole 10 mins in the morning to replace it! Reckons they should do it though!!

    Bloody Escorts!!!!

The exhaust sits about 2inches off the ground and its tight up against the underside of the car..
Bypassing notts at the mow is probley a good idea

Suppose it's better for it all to happen now, than on the hard shoulder of the M6, on the way to the lakes?!!!

This is what I'm worried about! If its on the way back then its not too bad, as I have enjoyed the Lakes and the AA can take me home

This is bad luck week for a few boys this week Hope you sort it and its not too much damage

Thought i was going to be the next victim! rolled the car out the garage pushed the button and.............. Nothing! eek
A brand new engine and it wouldn't start, checked the electrics etc.. all fine 12v at the coil but no spark
Spoke to Lee at H&H ignitions (as they originally supplied the dizzy) for any thoughts, and basically it could only be the coil or ignition module. He even offered to check over the unit if i took it to Donny spares and replace anything that was faulty FOC, what a top company.

Anyhow a mate (electrician) checked it out and it was the module... so £30 later were up and running
                          Phew..........
Glad to hear Rodders and Kev are getting sorted, Just Neil to replace the head gasket and we should all be sorted!

Jay is a top bloke and looks after your car.

The 500 is going in soon for small oil leak (which ****es me off dripping on the drive) under body clean and a standard exhaust
