  • Mates car

Evening lads. Can I pick your brains if possible? A mate of mine bought a car, (not an rs, a williams clio 3) In good faith from a private seller. He has had a letter from the dvla as to some discrepancies. I just done an on-line hpi check, and its coming up as a plate transfer has happened, also the vin number on his v5c does not match theirs.
    Stolen and ringed you reckon?
What happens to the innocent buyer these days if it is? Is there some law to protect them?
I hope some of you lads have more knowledge on this matter than us.
    Cheers boys

if you have bought a ringed/stolen car, the insureance company would probably have paid out so the car belongs to them if found, if not paid out its either the finance company or the pervious owner sadly

the police came to my uncles house and just took the Shogun he had bought for £15000, he got **** all, only thing is he could afford to lose it

        £15000 lost!!
It all points to a ringer on this one unfortunately, and i just searched and read a bit of information online and your right Brian, if you buy a stolen vehicle even in good faith you haven't a leg to stand on, you can sue the seller, but a private seller could prove difficult,
        Thanks Brian

best bet is to contact the seller and say you are going to the police

sorry to hear that hope he gets it sorted

happened to a mate of mine a few years ago he brought an escort van then found out it had be stolen and insurance company had already paid out so wanted it back he kept dragging it out with letters phone calls etc. and said he needed it for work and eventually they agrred to him paying half of it's value to keep it which was better than loosing it and his money all together

if he gets sorted with the seller eg gets the money back, then call the cops and tell them theres a ringer

Ooooh dear! I bought a Mk II once for £80, before doing so I asked a copper if I could find out if it was pinched. He said he wouldn't worry about it for £80 (days before HPI).
If there's any doubt I'd go through with a vehicle check, and have the RAC or AA or at least a good mechanic look at a car beforehand.
                  HPI costs £6-7!! That's all!!!

Looks like your mate's looking at a dead loss, as far as I know if you buy a ringer you loose all the wedge

Yes it was sorted Joe, apparently it was human error when a plate transfer was done filling in forms etc,
