                  Message From Verio Ops

                  Incident Details

The NTT Europe Online (NTTEO) Customer Support Centre became aware of sporadic alerts for servers in the London Hosting Facility shortly after 2140 UTC on 08/01/07. Within several minutes it became apparent that a significant proportion of servers within the London Facility were experiencing network connectivity issues, and the case was escalated immediately to the NTTEO Network Engineering team.

Initial investigation showed that a large-scale Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack was taking place, saturating several of the NTTEO peering points, and putting considerable load onto the core routers in the London Facility. After extensive research, the Network Engineering team isolated the target of the DDoS attack (namely, a customer server hosted within the facility). The IP of the target server was null-routed on the NTT backbone at 2240 UTC, and by 2255 UTC full connectivity had been restored to the facility.

                  Incident Resolution and Conclusions

The DDoS attack was targeted at a single customer server and IP address. The NTTEO Network Engineering team were able to resolve the incident by null-routing the targeted IP address. The null-routing propagated across the NTT backbone within 15 minutes – once this had taken place, normal connectivity was restored.

NTTEO has been actively engaged in dialogue with the targeted customer. The source of the DDoS attack has now been identified, and steps have been taken to prevent any recurrence.
