  • mk5 RS2000 owners

    has anybody owned a mk5 RS2000 as im thinking of buying one....any got any good or bad points on them, running costs etc....im thinking of 4x4 model....

    parts are getting rare and expensive, someone said the steering joints go and are specific to that car and are unobtainable even now !!!

      i used to owm an ex police example which was a crackin car, bit tatty though. used it for a couple of trackdays aswell. very usable

        I've had two, a MK5 bonnet bulge model and a MK5a with the oval grille, concoursed the 5a and won Gold Cup. They are ok but rot really bad, rear arches, fuel filler area, under rear spoiler mounting points on later smiley models, floor pans. Quite a few unique mechanical parts that are/will become hard to find. Think currently they are going through the cheap nacker phase, usually lots of £500 ones on the bay. Trim seams quite hard wearing. Very untuneable, exhaust and filter is about all, play with cams etc for lots of money but little gain. I personally would stay clear of the 4x4 version, the rear diff seams to come in for bad press, I know of people who have converted 4x4's back to 2wd due to lack of diff spares. Later MK6 reverted to drums on the back, apparently more GTi spec than RS.

        I think the one to go for as a long term keeper would be one of the early bonnet bulge models, standard spec, genuine mileage, good history and keep on top of the waxoil.

          Forgot to add

          Problems
          Not unknown for the plugs to spin themselves out, this then allows hot gases to melt the wires to the coil packs. If you are lucky the threads will be ok if not you need to helicoil the plug holes. This happened to me, kin nightmare, luckily local Ford dealer had a 2k in the bodyshop and let me rob parts off it to trace the wiring fault as the wires had fused inside the shielding and couldn't be seen.

          Clutch cables are a tw*t to change, took mine to a Ford dealer under warranty, they had to phone Ford to ask them how to do it and it took them a day and a half.

          Early cars had factory Vecta alarms, these were trouble from day one, car would just cut out when driving along, this should be sorted by now though.

            The wife has one and we both love it, rear is a bitch to work on as its based on a mix of mk5 rs2000 & Saff cossie rear axle.

              rear shox are hard to find, Gaz can do them.

              on 4x4's, twin fuel pumps. The tank is a W shape in lower profile and saddles the prop shaft, if the secondary pump goes it will not transfer the fuel to the primary cell in the tank, 1/2 tank of fuel and the enigne will not fire.

              We love the car, the mk6 4x4 is more refined than the Mk5 model 2wd. Bit like S1 RST v S2 RST.

                Transfer box - thats the part I was thinking of Kel when I said diff . Still think the early cars look nicer but the later 5a onwards are a much stiffer shell with better handling.

                  We really wanted a Black 5, but the one we have came up. Love the mk5, not really a fan of the 5a, 6 never liked till we got one. The 4x4 does love to be sideways - 60% drive to rear. Would like a ex-works mk5 as a track tool, the wifes car will do for this year...

                  the mk6 floor is the same as used in the WRC escort, so the story goes..

                    cheers for the replies lads....
                    been looking at a few but not in the flesh....it would be used as my every day car & get rid of my civic....finding one that has been looked after seems hard to find!!!!!....

                      Petrol !!!!

                      I used my white one for a 25k miles in 1 year, getting to work and back. The mk5 loved to be driven hard and urges you to do so but god the petrol it used it came close to the Mk2 on 44's. Boy it was fun !!!!

                      200 miles to a tank.


                      BTW the car is still going strong with a friend of mine and has just been on the rollers and produced 170bhp (chipped). When I had it was as ford made it !

                      We found ours on Autotrader, although its was on the RSOC site for a while.

                          had a mk 5 with the bulge (oooh er Missus) and it handled like a dream great fun.



                          Bad points
                          Fuse box (also ask Raybs)
                          Laquer on alloys (Also ask Raybs)
                          water leaks in to ****pit
                          Clutch cable a right B...ard (as per skater)
                          Rot on fuel filler area (as per skater )


                          al in, not really a bad car and im sure parts difficult to find could be sourced through the usual routes,
