  • Bet you lot are all tucked up in bed....

as opposed to me, stuck in bloody Dubai again on my way home. Only another 3 hour wait, 7 hour flight and 2 hours drive home....

    OK, answer me this :

Outbound flights, London to Dubai - 6 hours, Dubai to Shanghai 7 hours

Inbound flights, Shanghai to Dubai - 9.5 hours, Dubai to London 7.5 hours

Same route, same mileage. Why the time difference ?

Obviously head winds play a part but I also thought that maybe on the East to West flight direction the spin direction of the earth contributes as well - London is moving away at 1100 mph as the earth spins, yes the aircraft moves relative to the atmosphere which will also be spinning with the planet but does anyone think there might be a bit of 'slippage' contributing to increased flight time ?

Sorry - babbling now, something to do with another 30 hours without sleep in one week....

Arron, my little brother is an Airline Pilot and he says the winds around the equator make a big difference and the flight to China uses a different air corridor, the return uses a flight path more northern arced so has further to travel , so the 2 things combined lengthen the journey, then theres also the due landing times, they may have say 3 hours on the ground at London but all the spots are full until say 9am but they will arrive at 8:30 so they fly slower so they dont arrive too early

      HTH's lol

the flight to Aus takes average 21-22 hours the return takes 24 +
