  • Who knows about paint ?

    Car paint that is .
Can I use a 1k acid etch primer under a 2k acrylic (dove grey) ?
Or do I have to use a 2k primer ?
Before anyone says I know its illegal(ish) to spray this at home

Data sheet for the paint will reveal all. Usually downloadable in Internet. 1K primer is usual, 2K also do-able - but you sometimes have to pay attention to drying times (min and max) before applying next coat, thus you really should look for the datasheets. If you leave it too long, you may have to top (sand) the painted surface to reactivate it.

TBH, I would steer well clear of etch primer ESPECIALLY if you're spraying it. As the name suggests, it is acid and it etches and does not mind if it's your eyeball surface either. I was very tempted to use it on my resto but, after consulting the safety sheet and talking to a doctor I decided it wasn't worth the risk.

if your going to use etch primer it needs to be sprayed on as soon as u get the car back from the blasters and only put two coats on as too many coats can cause shelling or flaking ive been there before

Acid Etch 1 very thin coat as thats all u need
          then prime
          then dove grey
All very bad for health and dodgy spraying at home, hope your neighbours dont call the Health and safety executive.

          Air fed respirator a must

I've used aerosol acid etch primer to good effect.

                Made by U-pol, called Acid#8

Also used Tetrosyl 2 pack etch primer as well, the acid is in the thinners

Used in a well extracted booth while wearing a proper mask BTW
                Cheers Rob.
