    just a bit of fun

whats the best car/s that your parents have owned that you remember

my dad was a panel beater all his working life and he used to get some interesting stuff - i remember a few escorts over at his works, but i always remember his '73 inca yellow dolly sprint PLJ 713 M, from around '78 - even used to show off with his brother in it (and his was about 44 when he had that, , so i guess he cant moan about me and the X !!!! )

mum had a hotted up mini cooper, well dad says the carbs were off a cooper !!!!!

My Dad built a Fairthorpe Electron Minor kit car (before I was born) this was the best car he had in my opinion, subsequent cars were a Triumph 1300 (FWD-the one that the Toledo was based on), followed by a RWD Cavalier 1.6 then a Montego 1.6L. He also owned a 1958 Austin A35, bought for £50 in 1976 from the first owner.

He passed away in 1990, and my Mum PX'ed the Montego for a new Fiesta XR2i, about 5 months later.

I kept hold of the A35 for about 5 more years, then sold it on to someone who was going to restore it, never seen it since
    Cheers Rob.

Being a Ford man, i remember my dad going through a series of Escorts and mk3 Cortina,s. My favourite without a doubt was "K" plated sloping dash quite rare 1.6gt, 4dr, early car with coffing seats and that wonder four dial pod, BVR with Daytona Yellow paintwork, it had the small pod mirrors on the wings. Stunning looking car. Often thougt about having one exactly the same

Dad had a MK2 Cortina 1300 Delux in Green, remember going all around Norway in it when I was 5yrs old, that was followed by MK3 & MK4 Cortinas before he passed away.

My dad had a couple of new MK3 Capri's , one being one of the very first MK3's on an S plate . He then moved on to Sciroccos and at one time when I had a Fiesta Supersport he thought he would go one better and went out and bought a new 1.4S Fiesta.
Unfortunately my Dad passed away several years ago so I now advice my mam on what to buy , she's got a superb MK2 Mexico ..................not

There are a few cars which stand out in my childhood memory amongst the haze of Granada Ghias' and BMW's that were the normal mode of transport, namely a Jensen Interceptor Mk.III, a 911 Turbo, a 308 GTB and a Bently Mulsanne Turbo...the Jensen being the most supreme Grand Tourer I've ever encountered, but it did something like 8mpg!!

It's the competition cars that still stick out in my mind above all others though...the ex-works Gp.4 RS1800, another new Gp.4 RS1800 built by David Sutton, my Mum's brand new RS2000 Custom which she'd only had 6 weeks when it was 'borrowed' by the old man and converted into a full Gp.1 spec rally car when he decided he fancied a go at rallying...she never did forgive him for that. The brand new RS1800 road car (and I mean brand new...it was still on trade plates ) which he killed in an alcohol-fuelled 'jolly' around the lanes with a couple of mates after a Rotary Club shin-dig, as well as a few Mk.1 Lotus Cortinas (one ex-works), and the virtually brand new Capri 2.8 injection that was once again 'borrowed' from my mother (and duly equipped with a 4.6 ZF LSD, Gp.4 Escort front brakes, harnesses, Super Oscars and a sump guard) for him to use as 'Course Car' on the local road rally which he used to sponser!!

                    Happy days...

just thinking back, the first i remember was an Anglia estate, then a very nice Escort Estate in met brown, i remember the mk3 Cortina,s, a white 2.0glx auto, a Miami Blue 2000E, the beautiful 1.6gt Daytona Yellow car, several mk3,s, a Volvo, a Chrysler, a very nice Grananda 2.8ghia X in Met green with Grey leather, a Calibra, etc etc, it was my Uncle that got me into rs,s, i just about remember he had a blue rs1600, then the pre-custom white mk2 R plated car. I remember very well him proudly telling me that he,d done a deal with the rs1600 for this newish mk2 for a £1000 plus his car ...... if only he knew...

Coolest car my old man had was the ex Roger Clark 4wd Rallycross Mk1 Capri. One of only 3 ever made when Foot and Mouth first killed off rallying. He registered it and made it a rally car in the early eighties before the Quattro came along. Not much that could beat it back then. before that he also had one of the ex works twin cams which he absolutely destroyed into a little round ball of scrap metal, bought a nearly new Mk2 and swaped what useable parts remained over.

Mum had an immaculate 1071 Cooper S in the early 70's but my personal favourite was a white Mk2 Pre Custom RS2000 in the mid 70's. She loved the exhaust note so after that it was Alfa sud's, Sprints and MGB's all noisey too. If only ASBO's had been invented back then !

A load of crap usually Morris Minor, Hilman Super minx, Hilman Minx mk2 (Didn't learn the first time), Vauxhall Viva, AUSTIN ALLEGRO (The shitty one with the silly wheel and RR type radiator in Beige) (I later inherited this stinking pile of crap) Then the best, A MK2 MEXICO (which got me started) Which was stolen after 3 months. Then a brace of MK2 Fiestas till he could no longer drive.

reading this lot and thinking back is making me chuckle!

from what my brother has told me and from what i remember my dads had all sorts of american cars, pick ups and trucks rangeing from a corvette stingray, mustangs, chevy step side pickups, chevy blazer, cameros, one of them woody estate things, a gmc van painted like the A team van for my benifit and he had a big MACK truck for work! ( he was a long distance lorry driver mostly abroud stuff).

other cars include mk2 cortina gt 2 door ( changed colour when it got wet? ) a morris minor pick up, a stretched 6 wheeled mini van, opel manta, opel monza, loads of granandas mk1 and 2s, triumph stag convertable, bmws, mercedes, loads of different land rovers inc v6, v8, a forwared contol 2b one (which used to patrol sothport beach) and a rare as hell swb s1 landrover that was 2wd spicial built for an high up RAF officer apparently?? worth a bit now i bet ( damm )

mum was just happy with a mk2 1.1 fiesta which was called peggy!!

as you can see dad liked his cars and swaped and changed them too often ,mostly spending cash on them first and not getting it back ( that pleased mum....NOT )

                              RIP dad
