Should the way Concours be judged change

A team of 10 judges ferret around the car for I think 10-20 minutes.

Yep, I would like to see this. (I believe it is less than 10 minutes, in the wet it was only 4 ! !)

It would make concistancy across the classes a lot better & no one judge would be able to significantly bias the result to a car they particularly like.

I'm not sure about the organisation of such a judging system though. At auto-glym there is a fixed number of cars that can turn up, so they know what to cater for. At regional days it's all down to who turns up on the day.

Ligh****er had 35 cars, so with only 5 minutes a car, it would take 3 hours to judge the complete field.

Another possible issue is on originality, would it mean that every judge would need to know what is original on every car they are judging ? ? ?

Also It wuold mean that every judge would need to be there on time ( ask Giz - lol )


But it does sound like a better way of doing it, if it could be made easy enough to impliment.

Nice in principal, but it is hard enough to find judges at the best of times.

Who else do you know who owns an RS200 / MK2 RS1800 /MK1 RS1600 that could judge.

when members "sign on" they get a plaque of the show, - give them one judging slip with the various categories on and let them go out and pick their favourite model in each range, i.e best mk2 Rs2000, best Escort Cosworth, best Focus etc members then return their forms to a "post it box" in the signing on tent, with their name and membership number on it. All forms to be returned by 2.30 pm.after 2.30 the post it box is removed therefore ensuring promptness.

4.30 pm, two hours will have been ample to compile and announce unbiased results, and just before car of the day is announced, there is a draw from the post it Box to give the lucky member a decent prize for bothering to have a look and voting - result - Members get to judge what car is best, members get to enter a worthwhile "prize draw" (three years free membership, or £100 Voucher to spend in RSOC "shop" as example) and concours guys get the peoples vote regardless if the voters have knowledge of that model or not.

No need for judges, no waiting for judges to turn up, no bias etc etc


ok, ok,
lots of comments expected about originality and so and so's mates all voting for him/her, but whilst any Bufty will have a lot of his / her mates at the event, there will be more "nuetrals" than mates thus a fairer vote.

I think this was done a few years ago in show and shine. It always went to the car that had the most in their regional group there on the day. ??

I think Grahams idea is a great one, everyone should judge the cars, collectively they have the greatest knowledge surely, the current way is open to favourtism, thats not fair. each car in each class should be given an equal chance

I vote for autoglym method, its something else to watch on a day of 'same old cars, different field'

thats a good point Alan, i certainly wouldn,t want that even if it involved maybe being placed somewhere in a competition

Would make car of the day easier as well, as they would all have been judged by the same group of people.

no.

The boonnet / Boot could be open, maybe a door or so, we would not want people clambering all over the car but merely looking at it from an untouchable distance (similar to some motorshows). Possibly four corner posts and some bunting be supplied by the RSOC in a given space (5mtrs x 3mtrs ) and members judge from outside that barrier - at least that would also give continuity to the judging also as they would not be able to clamber about in the cars. Remember also that virtually every Bufty these days has enough mirrors around their cars to make the final scenes of enter the Dragon look like a piece of tin foil, thus virtually all details of the vehichle can be seen fairly close up without the need to go clambering inside.

As i also said, someone may have a load of mates, there is also the likelehood that all concours entrants would have a similar amount of mates (thus cancelling out that problem)`but it would be left to the nuetrals who would far outnumber the mates, as would have been the case at ND last week

do we know how many people actually sign on at an event like national day? im a rsoc member and have never signed on (only when i was on the dole)
