        Black Beauty was UYY256S in a "previous life" before Vatanen won the Acropolis 1980 in it with Rothmans livery. His MCD cars of 1982 were also black with white stripe same as Gerard's car.

          I thought it was a brand new "car" carrying the DKP191T Identificaton and the shell was built by R.E.D. I'm sure someone contacted R.E.D. (Can't remember what they're called now) and they were very helpfull in providing information on the car. Could be wrong though

          Cheers
          Chris.

            [anorak=ON]

            It's a popular misconception that the black Shell Oils/MCD Services car DKP191T was 'Black Beauty'...an easy mistake to make really. Fact of the matter is that Miniliteman is correct in saying that it was in fact UYY256S that was Christened 'Black Beaty' originally. The original UYY may not have looked as purposeful as the super-wide arched (Monte Carlo arches as they came to be known, despite them bearing no resemblence to the original works 'Monte' cars arches!!) DKP, but it was full of very clever and subtle suspension mods that made it a very unique car...I seem to remember reading that Dave at Gartrac was very proud of it.

                I work for myself Brian (with competition Escorts), but I've been involved with and building Escorts for a very long time. I have a fairly good knowledge of them too as I was brought up (or 'dragged up' depends which way you look at it...) in my fathers Ford Main Dealership through the '70's and 80's, and he also ran ex-works RS1800's himself at the time so it all kinda stuck with me.

                When your old man regularly picks you up from school in the late 70's in his ex-Clark/Cossack RS1800, before going for a quick half hour 'test-run' on the way home, you're on a one way ticket to being an Escort basket-case...

                    'Elusive'...now there are at least a dozen ways that could be interpreted!!

                    I have no flags to fly, nor axes to grind Brian...I just like to offer my opinion, assistance, or even benign tit-bits of possibly useless information if I feel it may be relevant or beneficial.

                      For several photos of UYY visit http://www.rallyretro.com/index.asp and search for Ari Vatanen .

                      Also does someone have info & specs on the engine of the MCD/Shell Oils Vatanen car of 1982? I believe it was build by Dave Wild.

                            DKP or FEK

                            Everyone goes on about Vatanen in 82 in DKP
                            Watch the DVD Vatanen touch 2 and you will see it ran
                            DKP Plates and FEK plates on the Ulster I think as MCD
                            had two cars I believe in the shell colours
                            Watch the DVD see if you spot it?
