........... and engine builders top secret pencil.
Just a guess but does builder mark each lobe with lead from the pencil and then rotate cam to see where clearance "ends" and cam comes into contact with the tappet bucket ?
Or does he simply write down the clearances as he measures em ! - lol

Your guess is as good as mine.
I thought I would mention the pencil, before someone else did.
Other suggestions welcome.
I have the 100 RON MBT spark map for this engines compression ratio and cam profile. So I will most probably fit the engine to the car. Tune the drivability and closed loop fueling on the road, and optimise the wide open throttle spark and fuel with a rolling road session.
I done a trail fit of all the parts that bolt on to the engine at the weekend.
Because all the previous engine installation work was done with a dummy (scrap) block and head.

My first mistake is that the alternator belt is touching the front cover (near the bolt in the center of the cover). I will have to change the 2.3 Ranger rear wheel drive one for a Mk1 2.3 Focus (North America) front wheel drive version. But before I can fit it I will have to get the engine mount bracket machined off.
