  • MK1 Escort 1300GT 1972 Restoration

    Hi guys,

    I purchased a 1972 MK1 Escort 1300GT off Ebay about 18 months ago which I aimed to completely restore. I have compiled some photos of my progress so far as the car nears completion after about 18 months!

    I bought the car as a stripped shell in a bit of a state. It was fairly solid which was lucky. The car also came with all of the parts to build a complete car.

    The car needed an O/S lower corner panel, a passenger door and a set of outer Sills.

    When the car arrived home I put it on the Rollover Jig so that I could remove all of the nasty layers of underseal that had been applied over the past 40 years!

    This revealed a couple of areas that needed attention on the floor and gearbox tunnel. I repaired those areas and the lower corner with a new panel and then sent it to the painters!

    I chose for the car to be painted in the original colour of Sunset red. It has had a front panel in its life which was a round headlight one (Incorrect for the 1300GT's). I decided to keep it because i personally prefer the look of it.

    This is a photo of the car I found online before I owned it.



    The car when I picked it up, Don't ask why the olympic blue engine bay!



    I stripped the underside back to bare metal, made the necessary repairs and coated in etch primer and then applied a fresh coat of Dinitrol Rust proofing.





    Due to there being no inside working space I have had to work on the car outside! That was my daily MK1 Fiesta at the time.



    The car retaining its original 6 dial dash. The floor is tatty but solid.



    Due to lack of space some of the parts did live in the bathroom for a little while, parents were not best pleased!

    This is the block ready for assembly at Connaught Competition Engines who did a fantastic job! Smoothest Crossflow I have ever heard! For insurance purposes as a young driver I kept it fairly standard with some subtle changes.

    BCF2 Mild Cam
    Bronze Guides
    Hardened Seats

    The engine was run on Connaughts Superflow Dynamometer where it made a mighty 85Hp!


















    The car is now almost finished. There are a couple of electrical problems that need to be addressed but other than that its ready for the road! Its also missing a couple of "F O R D" chrome letters which are on there way.


    I was just wondering if anybody had any stories or knew anything about the car please? Or pictures would be fantastic.

    Also it says the car was registered in Dorset. Would anybody know which Ford dealer that would be by any chance?

    I will also post some more pictures of the car when its all finished and interior pictures.

    Hope to attend some shows this season if all goes well!

          What? like the exhaust manifold - nah wouldn't spot that ! LOL!

          Nice car, nicely done - lucky to find so little rot!

            nice looks good, keep a check on those wires by exhaust manifold,you might have to protect them from the heat with a sleeve.
