  • My Mk2 Escort Build (Rally Looks/Fast Road Use)

Hi All and thanks for looking at my resto thread, if you see anything thats out of place feel free to put me straight. This is only the 2nd mk2 ive ever owned my first one i had when i was the tender age of 12 and i was more concerned in seeing how many times i could roll it than looking after it !!!! If only i had took my dads advice at the time maybe 23 years later id of got the mk2 bug out of my system. But back then mk2s were not wanted and could be picked up for £50 and at that time and that age it was only an old escort lol... Anyway i made the move over from cosworths to try my hand at some old skool stuff so time will tell if its been the right decision.....
I started taking my MK2 apart just before xmas with the intention of giving it a fresh lease of life. A quick rub down and repaint wasnt going to cut the mustard for me so the decision was made to take it all the way back to the bare bones and build it from the ground up into a tarmac spec looking rally car for fast road use... Anyway the car was striped fairly quickly and I had some prep done for when it was due to go the fabricators at the end of January.

Some pics pre strip when last on the blacktop in October (The colour was never to my taste but as this was always going to be replaced it didnt bother me, also the wide monte arches were binned ASAP) I decided against turrets and rear coilovers as ill never be in the forest stages doing jumps so a sorted GRP1 rear end is ample IMO....

After much searching and thinking about what colour to choose im totally sold on yellow. This is what im aiming for it to look like when its complete ( But unfortunately minus the Millington unless a certain 6 numbers come in

Not to many pics of the strip as I didnt see the point, No major surprises on the rust front as it was in good order just needed saving and addressed now not skimmed over with filler. The heater bowl looked good but was hiding some rust when i rubbed it down other than that i could of got away with using the front panel/slam panel but decided to replace all of it.

The shell was an automatic car and look at what a butcher did to get the type 9 into it... Made a mess of the tunnel and drilled the sierra gearbox mount up through the floor, shame to have to take the auto tunnel out but this had to go..

Door pillars and front floor sections were ok but decided to replace rather than repair

After getting to this stage the first shopping list for GR4 Fabrications was put together which resulted in this.

My apprentice wasnt too happy about not having the freedom of the touring on the way home

Not a happy puppy at all

    Unloaded the goodies

Picked this Safety Devices 6 point bolt in cage from a guy breaking a rally car, once painted it will be as good as new..

Now onto the exciting stuff I didnt take any pics while the fabrication was going on as I knew Gary was taking some for me throughout the build,

Anti tramp brackets fitted and Panhard tower with extra brace bar running across the floor for extra strength

Back to the heater bubble looked ok but filler was hiding some tin worm, once removed the bowl needed sorting out too, im not putting the standard heater back into the car so bowl was removed and fully sealed up. Im going to be using a rally car heater far more efficient and lighter than the prehistoric heater that was in it.

Old 205 block and type 9 for mocking up

Some of the old welds needed to be tidied on the cage, mounting plates and gussets all done

      Front end going together

      Seat bars and arches on

Aero catches in and i wanted the petrol tank platform altered to be made bolt in instead of weld it so Gary made brackets to allow it to be bolted in

Blanks and shell strengthening gussets all in, cable handbrake hole welded up as its no longer needed,

I picked the car up 2 weeks ago so my first job is to plug up all the small drill holes in the engine bay and cabin that are no longer needed Gary done all the larger blanks as my welding skills wouldnt be up to par apart from plugging a few small holes.. Once those are done its paint stripping time and get it into epoxy ASAP.... Im just finishing off a build of another kind at the moment so once thats all done this will be getting my full attention

While the car was the car gone to get all kitted out I started to refurbish some of the odds and sods

Eagle eye lookers will see ive done some work on the engine but leaving pics and final assembly till near the end of the project....
I cleaned down the BDA grill and blacked it out all over front and back which took bloody ages but its done now. I prefer the blue oval grill personally but ill see how this looks when fitted

Got some new headlights took a bit of searching to find the ones i wanted but these should suit the look im after (off a VW but with a minor adjustment they will fit right in)

Had to get a another few bits from GRP4 for mocking up the engine and box so the hole could be cut in the right place for the gear lever, also got some proper mounts for the tunnel as i didnt want the floor drilled for the gearbox cradle and a shell strengthening/blanks kit and cage gussets.

Very nice build! Serious money and work going into it. Seen the car many times when the last owner had it. Old arches were massive!

Thanks m8, yes Mick wasnt shy of driving it and those wide arches were horrid happy to say they have been binned ages ago, even with a 52" axle and 9" rim i dont think they would of been filled... I really need to get my finger out and start on it soon...

The yellow im using is signal yellow but with a extra touch of brightness in it so it wont be off the shelf but not a million miles away, but nothing will be confirmed untill test cards are done, its hard to find a nice yellow for an arched car..

Thats nice and bright Alan ive seen some signal yellow cars over here in the past and they dont look as bright, its one of the best colours in an arched MK2 I reckon

Coming along nicely Agree with yellow I'd like to do mine yellow but that would cause a divorce [might be a good thing] so I'm unsure on my colour.

Ha Ha as we say over here "marriage is grand but divorce is a hundred grand" Dark grey or silver is also nice like Torstens from GRP4 Fabrications but its always been yellow for me....
