  • Mk 1 mexico upgrades and refresh

One our latest cars is this clean Mk1 Mex, owned by its current owner for over 15 years and relatively standard. Collecting parts since purchasing the car the owner has now decided to have the mex refreshed and comissioned us to upgrade the brakes, engine, repaint the bay and replace the decals and roof lining.

A tidy looking bay but unfortunately plenty of layers of paint covering up a few issues.

With the engine, suspension and components removed we started by stripping back the engine bays paintwork, repairing a few sections and modifying the heater bowl to be removeable before prepping and priming

The owner has a tuned x-flow with twin dellorto carbs which he had built years ago.

With the bay repainted a new word cup x-member and new bottom end are refitted along with a heavy duty clutch and original box.

We also had to fabricate a new section of the hydralic clutch pipework as the original one had seen better days.

Very nice, Heater bubble am I right in thinking its going to be bolted on, studs welded to bubble etc?
liking that idea and might have to pinch it for mine

We fitted threaded alloy inserts into the bulkhead, a foam gasket will be made and the new heater bowl will be screwed down.

Is that just so you can paint and protect the unseen areas?

That and he could pop it off to clean out any debris that usually ends up collecting in the bottom.

An oil cooler is mounted up with an original style cooler mount, we have also made a few alterations to squeeze in a MK1 3000 Capri rad.

The Dellorto's, a new Ashley exhaust, a set of Samco hoses and a Kenlow fan finish off the bay.

Over the years a few panels have been repainted and some new sections of the decals replaced and unfortunately these are a diffferent shade to the originals so new set from DMB graphics will be added.

Did you just drop the servo mount down to the lower set of bolts on the bulkhead?

We didn't need to alter bulkhead fixings just lower the fixing points by about 10mm on the front of the servo .
