  • Skin removal from Knuckles time!

Time to get on with fitting those new seals and gaskets only, not reso here just yet, (two more years maybe)!

    1,

    2,

    3,

    4,

Anybody fitted a new seal to the axle whilst in the car, ready to remove the retaining bolt and flange (see picture) but not confident in removal or re-fitting the new seal (brought from ebay last year). Can I just detroy the old one on extraction?

    Thanks,

    Phill

I would not refit the old seal anyway. Do you mean removing the nut not bolt? There is a crushable spacer on the pinion shaft which is used to set the diff correctly, and a new spacer should be fitted and torqued every time you remove the flange to fit a seal etc. What I do is before I remove the nut, I mark the nut and the shaft then count the number of turns it takes to remove the nut. On reassembly I tighten up the nut that number of times it took to remove it and then finally align the two marks up. If you do this right then it will save you the trouble of getting a new crushable washer. It's worked on several cars for me, but that's up to you and you have to be very careful to get the nut back to exactly where it was, no less and no further! Also you need to keep the seal evenly and square as it's going in, or else it might distort it. You could find a short metal tube cut nice and square to use to fit this!

      Good Advice

Thanks Tim, I will do exactly as you have said. If I balls it up, where can I get a new crushable thingy?

Phill, if you do **** up the axle seal / crush washer it will be diff out and probably a trip to a specialist. I tried to do mine on a workshop bench and it is very diificult to stop the pinion moving to check the backlash etc. The crush washer controls the pinion bearing preload and the device to check that is a specialist tool.

Dave (Custom) on here does a great job and 3J Driveline are not far from you and I think they will set them up as well.

Good luck, Tims method works well, just be careful.

                    Excellent Advice

I am well put off, but thanks anyway. I will live with the drip drip for now and take to those suggested when I'm fully on the road and can wait for the experts to sort.

I will carry on with the gearbox and engine gaskets, they are well within my capability.

                    Cheers again Escort worshippers!
