All down to putting out the feelers with the people in the know and took loads of convincing with the owner

That was my dilemma
Now I'm using it it would have gone down hill quickly, fine parked up in a dry barn but not on the 'sunny' lakes tour lol

Trouble today is that we pile too much paint on our cars to make sure they never ever rust again, but in doing this we lose all indicators of originality. You only have to view cars painted in 2 pack, they now have a better finish than original.

Looking for the original car, we always end up looking under the bonnet and inside the boot for originality. We can tell by seeing an engine compartment beginning to rust because of the very little paint that Ford applied to the areas that were not seen so much. In many cases it was only down to a thin misting of primer to give the bodywork protection from moisture. I think the answer for many of us would be to "fake" this look!

Maybe to get that affect back and still protect the bodywork we need to spray our engine compartments in the usual way using primer and top coat, but using a grey the same colour as primer for a top coat to seal and give the protection required, then misting a thin coat of colour as Ford did, showing slight evidence of grey showing through around the edges. You would need to study original cars to get the amount of paint and affect looking right but this could work out very well if done properly!

Engine ancilliaries too should not be piled up with paint. They are better primed just to cover all surfaces, then painted in top coat, again just enough to cover and protect. Rust does not always appear because of the thiness of the paint, but due to lack of primer and the accidental chipping off of paint!

The only problem I see is that some prospective buyers might be concerned that the more original we can get them, the more difficult it might be to identify a truely original car, but hopefully other indicators will remain to be seen, like the thick 2 pack paint we love painting the exterior with these days!

All something to think about maybe!

Thinking I haven't posted an update for a long time..... now on the second engine build, the first one was getting water in the oil!
All seems well now, new block, head, cam carrier, pistons etc etc
