Although I'm no stranger to RS2000s, I've owned about half a dozen, Ive only ever owned one 2lt Mk 1 in the 20 or so years I've owned old Fords.
To be honest, I much prefer the shape of the Mk 2 RS with the big plastic Nosecone and quad lamps, but having owned so many I thought I'd better pay respect to the original and get myself a Mk 1 to add to my collection of old Fords.
Many years ago I had a bucket list of old Fords I wanted to own. This was long ago when they were worth nothing and it was possible to buy an RS3100 for a few thousand dollars. My list include a V6 Capri, an RS2000, a lotus Cortina, an RS Cosworth Sierra and RS 3100. It was an ambitious list but at the time I owned 2 of them and with a stroke of luck, I might fill the rest, which I almost did having the opportunity to to purchase the latter three at some point in the past.
After a few years of dreaming I revised my list to 3 varieties of Capris and 3 versions of Escorts. Having purchased the 2 Mk 2s (RS2000 and Flat-Front Rally Pack Repo....More on those later) I decided I'd like to build my own Mk 1 RS2000 myself.
There will be a few difference from the original cars however. One, I'm using an earlier shell (1972) for the simple reason it is a good shell. The later ones with the revised suspension are rare and despite popular belief, do rust in Australia, particularly in Melbourne which is cold and wet for several months of the year.
Anyway.....onto the build.
