  • Mk2 2.3 Duratec back panel and boot tidy-up

John has long disliked the back panel on his car, not just because of the cut out at the bottom, but also the large quantities of filler that were smoothing out the lines and pressed shapes under the bumper.

The boot lid was also an area for concern, as when the car was purchased it was fitted with a boot which had rust issues covered over by filler - this may become a theme

Firstly, the car after John and I had pushed it off the trailer and into my workshop :

John has already stripped the boot of : tank, pumps, swirl-pot and battery, so we had to trailer it and push it about.

Seen on the floor is the new repro back panel from Escort Tec ( thankyou to Darran and Mark )

The reason for a whole panel rather than just a lower valence is because ( as I've said) too much filler in the old back panel.

Once I started to clean down to bare metal, the depth of it became apparent, along with a repair hidden underneath :

    Cheers Rob.

You can just see the weld repair I'm talking about going vertically down to the left of the original panel seam.

Also, where the back panel has been cut out, instead of having a neatly turned over edge, it has had a piece of box section steel welded to the boot floor running between the chassis rails. This is itself is not a problem, and I intend to leave it in situ, as it actually makes the edge of the floor nice and stiff.

The rest of the panel is off, there's a couple of grotty areas, that had previously been covered with filler and seam sealer - shame really, as the bloke who repaired the car previously could obviously weld, so why not just do it properly ?

The photo above is from inside the boot looking out from the offside
    Cheers Rob.

The back panel is completely off, tomorrow is :small repairs to the flanges, then make the new panel fit over the exhaust, and weld it in place.

      Cheers Rob.

          You are correct

I've bought another one as well, so I don't have to keep swapping the backing pad for different sized discs
          Cheers Rob.
