  • Doing it all again 20 years on

Had my last Mk2 RS2000 custom 20 years ago (present to myself on completing my apprentiship, when earning reasonable money and could afford a loan)

Stripped it, cleaned and painted/polished it always regretted selling her.

Had a very original lovely old Series 3 Jag as my Toy when someone at work told me an RS meet was to be held at Croft, so went along and fell in love again

Sure some of the trim compared with the Jag was very flimsy but although always had a thing for the Leather and wood it was a cruising car not a drivers car so decided to get another Escort.

Found a steel arched mk1 RS2000 on Classic car classifieds but although the guy verbally agreed to sell me the car and told me it was a waste of time sending him a cheque as he couldnt cash in in France (where he now lived) he sold it to a dealer as it turned out that simply re advertised it and made a couple of grand out of it.

So was on E-Bay and saw a Black 79 Mk2 custom at a reasonable price (buy it now) so after contacting the seller (Johnnie Johnston of JJ Motorsport) and asking about the car, told me it was sound.

Took him to his word (was a professional with knowledge of the cars so felt safe and over the phone sounded a good guy) we were going on Holiday so he agreed to hold it.

When we got back and discovering how long it would take to get the car (advertised with 10 months mot and he agreed to tax it) desided to get it trailered to me.

When it turned up I was dissapointed to say the least but he wasnt willing to take it back, had gone over the time limit on E-Bay so they wernt any help.

Tried to reason with him but wasted time, eventually getting nowhere with him (sure he knew its true condition)

Luckily I paid for it on my card so got something back after the club valued the car for me.

Has taken about 6 months to find someone that could takle the job to the standard I wanted at a price I could afford to pay, in the mean time had stripped the car and refurbished nearly everything ready for when the shell was sorted

Mark has been working on the car for about 2 weeks now and the transformation is amassing, thanks must also be given to Darran and Mark at Escort-tec for sorting me out the fantastic front end to repair the car.

I had stripped and cleaned all the underside and was pleasently surprised at how good the rear of the car was, now the front has been fitted by joining at the factory seams of the inner A Pillar and along the bottom of the bulkhead and tunnel, was very impressed with the standard of the work

Some pictures of how it was when I got it

During cleaning prep work, refurbishing bits.

Repair work now going well with only passenger chassis section to be replaced (wasnt too bad but as the other had been changed seamed a shame not to have 2 new ones) then rear arches to do then prep and paint

Hope the pictures come out ok

not nice being caught but as the thread states you got a little back. the restoration looks great, so at this standard, the cars' going to be mint.

best of luck with the rest of it. the problems start when little fidgety things dont work on the rebuild. it typical with the older car.

will keep watching with interest to see her finished.

Hi Pete, I see you have nicely painted your alternator bracket as I did on mine. When I did this to mine I switched the ignition on and the ignition light did not come on. After about a couple of hours tracing my wiring I left a spanner across from the alterator to the block and hey presto the light came on. The alternator has to be earthed to the engine, and the paint on the bracket can prevent this!

Hoping to save you time should this happen to you.

              Tim.

Thanks guys for your comments, sure the car will be better than if I had bought one for the money I paid but its been a difficult year due to it

Really pleased with the work Mark is doing, he is a true RS nut, has a Mint series 1 turbo, a saph cossie (both on the road) and 3 mk2's. Black RS2, Yellow RS2 (both pre customs) and a Mex all awaiting there turn

Must also say thanks to Dandibo who was willing to back me up in court regarding the car if it went that far, he viewed the car and pointed out several things to Johnston which he conveniently didnt pass on to me

Some more pics of bits ready to go back on, most things got put away before took pics so will add them as they come out of hibernation

Tim, thanks for info but all alloy parts have been cleaned/polished not painted.

Have loads of nice zinc bolts to use on re-fit.

Have done a deal with Errol for some remaining stickers to complete the project, cant wait to get to the stage of fitting them

Pete it's not the alloy one, I should have said the steel alternator adjuster bracket, it looks painted black! This is the one I had problems with.
