  • 1300 Sport

I have been advised to move this thread from the Main Message Centre.

After joining the forum, I advertised for a mk2 1300 Sport, surprise, surprise, I didn't have any offers. However, last week I took delivery of a green 1300 Sport and when I looked at the Ford 'code-chart' it was made in February 1975 (early one) and registered in March the same year.

As the car needs SERIOUS restoration, I have been scouting through various Escort books which say that there were 'changes' between the early and latter Sports. I have also looked at some old Ford catalogues to find details of these 'changes' but without success.

I know this is mainly a RS forum, but it seems that other members have had Sports through the years. Any help guys? Pics? Anything would be appreciated.

I liked the Sport, which was a very underestimated car, always overshadowed by the RS Models. The 1600 Sport was more of a replacement for the Mk1 Mex than the Mk2 Mex was. It was also better value than the Mk2 Mex and it's engine performed just as well....................probably another reason why the Mk2 Mex did not sell in great numbers, the first reason was by being overshadowed by the RS2. We could never accept why the Mk2 Sport was not worthy of front/rear spoilers and the RS dash.....the later Mk1 Sport was eventually given all the Clocks so why not the Mk2 Sport, it was just seen as cost cutting.....I suppose the answer lay with Ford wanting to keep it well separate from the RS models.

Unfortunately many Sport's as with the Mk1 Sport lost their identity earlier on by owners not being able to resist adding RS bits on, which had become freely available by then, attempting to make them look like the Mk2 Mex.

These days it's refreshing to see a nice unspoilt original example. I'll look forward to seeing any Sports shown being restored on here.

                      Tim.

Received the 'previous owners' package back from DVLA today. The logbook says 'green', but started life as 'gold' coloured!!! And it turns out that the car was delivered from Skellys in Bootle, Merseyside... 5 minutes walk from my house.

Looking forward to contacting some previous owners.
