  • HGD 216T Rally rebuild.

Started rebuild to my Escort at the beginning of the year.
Have made slow progress but for sure will be worth all the effort in the end.

Things looked pretty grim at the beginning of the year though.

The car was in this state two years ago.

I will try to post pictures of the rebuild to date over the next few weeks.

The tops of the inner wings were in a bad state of repair.

Instead of replacing both inner wings i decided to purchase the full size tops from expressed panels. Had to get brave with the grinder though after measuring everything out.

Eventually a few tack welds were made and alignments were checked only to find that one panel differed in length from the other. Tack welds were ground down and adjustments with the grinder were made to the panel before the final alignment and welds were made.

The difference appeared to be that the passenger side inner wing top was slightly longer in length than the drivers side.
The length from the strut top to the bulkhead was different and required a few mm trimmed off and the bulkhead required slight manipulation with a large hammer.

Other than that i could not fault the quality and i would go down the same route of replacement again as long as the inner wings command the crazy price that is presently being asked.

After the hammer, out came the drill to put lots of holes in the brand new tops so the Hadrian inner pan can be attached.
A few plug welds with the mig and a skim with the grinder and i was ready to weld in the top plates which i ended up getting from prepfab.

always nice to see another resto, keep going, you will also find this BB resto section very beneficial for the rebuild,
