  • Insurance - Escort as daily driver

I would appreciate a bit of advice regarding insurance.

I just sold my daily driver and we will shortly be trading my wife's car in along with some (or most likely all) of the cash to get a bigger car. It has sort of just dawned on us that with me working from home and the wife not working we really don't need 2 daily cars plus the Escort!

I had intended to cancel my classic limited mileage policy and just insure the Escort as a regular car to keep up my no-claims and as I thought you needed a main policy before you can have a classic policy (turns out its ok just to be a named driver on the wife's car - although I am going to confirm that in writing to them!!).

However when I rang to change my main policy to the Escort the broker explained that they could not have an agreed valuation on the Escort as it would just be "book" prices should it get damaged or stolen. He believed this was the case with all 'main' policies and only a classic policy gives you agreed values.

So to cut a long story short do any of you have your classic insured with an agreed value as your main car and if so who with?

    Thanks for you tuppence worth!

Can't you just keep it on a classic policy and up the annual mileage or does that mess with your ncb?

I don't think you earn ncb on a classic policy. we could change round every few years as policy holder and named driver to make sure we both keep our ncb but it would just be handy to do the escort as a 'normal' car.

Better with an agreed value classic policy as normal policies will give you book price if the worst happens.
I have 4 policies its a nightmare, 1 for the family Cmax, 2 classic policies with agreed values or the BMW E30 and RS2000 and 1 for the Bike.

Adds up to about a grand a year, not to bad all in.
Use the BMW in winter on the classic policy, limit 5000miles
Use the bike in summer limit 5000
Used the RS for 130miles last year
        Cmax when im made too

I am lucky - working from home as an architect I spend most of my time on the office but if its a nice day and I need to go to a meeting / site visit the Escort gets out quite a bit!! With that and the Irish Escort Club runs up and down the country I put 3500 on the Harrier last year (and a big smile on my face too). Car ran faultlessly with no problems at all!
