Im pretty sure if you tax online you are allowed 9 days after the tax run out for the new tax disc to arrive.

at least i think that is what the automated message said when i taxed mine online the other day.

on another note, but along a similar line, does every car, regardless of state of condition, has to be declared SORN now ?
eg. my little project, not been used/taxed since 1991 - i asked when i first got it, march 2009, if it had to be declared SORN at the post office when taxing another car and was categorically told NO, because cars before a certain date didnt have to be

should i, just for peace of mind ?

I think in this case "Yes", as you bought the car recently.

mine is on Sorn (first reg 1978) and had a note from DVLA saying it either had to be taxed or SORN

might still be on SORN by the turn of the Century

Regardng the SORN stuff , it only counts if the car was on the road/taxed at the time they invented it . Anything off the road from before that will only need SORNing once it's been taxed later on (if that makes sense) .

Regarding the taxing on line , you're meant to do it BEFORE the old tax disc runs out so that you receive it before the old one runs out . There's a trumped up charge/fine of "not displaying a tax disc" that they can hit you with otherwise .
They should catch some proper criminals if you ask me so i always tell them that too **** them off !!! lol .

Keiron is correct, sorry Gaz wrong this time

If a car was off road before the SORN thing came in thats fine no SORN required , however if the owner sells you the car you have to SORN it because it is flagged up on DVLA as it has aquired a change of keeper.

I know this because I fell foul of it, exactly as above, bought a car that had been off road for years before SORN came in, when the V5 was changed to my name and change of address I didn't bother SORN, nearly cost me £££££

The current confusion surrounds insurance and tax, if its not SORN'd it has to be taxed AND insured.

taken in all of the above, and told the post office gals that i was a new owner, but they said because it had been off the road before SORN, it wasnt needed, which in my view does seem daft - will try again on tues just to see

If the car is on sorn I was told I couldn't tax it more than 2 days in advance so tried on line but the tax would have started on the 1st of the month I was taxing it in. ie I would lose a months tax so left it until the 1st of the month and taxed on line. Obviously I didn't have the tax disc so I rang the local plod and they confirmed I was OK to use for 5 days without showing a disc but did advise me to print off the receipt and carry in the car till I got the disc from DVLA.
