  • quick racks...should I?

Hello all, sorry if this is in the wrong place, the rack on my 76 mk2 has massive play, now do I replace it with a quick rack, will it be ok on what is predominantly a road car, if yes how manyturns lock to lock, then lastly would it also benifit from new strut top mounts?

Yes, 2.4 turn one on mine and I find it fine for day to day use, but everyone has different opinions.

Mine had one fitted when I first bought it, it came off straight away as I did not like it. The RS steering is heavy enough in standard form, this made it too heavy when maneuvering and not worth the gain in having quicker response!

Great thing about a standard rack is that it's the same as all the others apart from track rod ends!

I've fitted one and it did make the steering a bit heavier, but as I didn't use the car every day it didn't cause a problem.
Also made it much easier to balance the steering against the throttle when going sideways.

Roller top mounts would probably ease the effort reqd, as would PAS. Depends how strong you are lol always easier when wheels are rolling. Maybe ask to have a go in someones before you decide

I would stick with standard for a road car , unless you have power steering as already said.

I have one in my Escort and I wouldnt have an Escort with a standard rack imo.
The weight of the steering doesnt bother me. I took my Escort out on the weekend after driving my Focus everyday and I find it grand. Get yourself a 2.9 lock to lock rack which is a decent improvement.

Well I swim over 3k a week so hopefully upper body strength is good, think I'll try a 2.9. Thank you everyone for your input. I will let you know how I get on.
