Just to add yet another perspective, in 1993 my wife (then girlfriend) had her escort stolen in Reading. It was a genuine 15000 mile 2 door popular plus in fantastic condition.
It was fitted with brand new capri 4 spokes, rs steering wheel, ghia interia etc etc.
It was gone 2 months before some coppers on a visit to a dodgy person decided to spot check the engine number on a mk2 they had.
To cut a very long story short, it had been ringed on to the ID of a rusty escort they owned.
We had to go to court to prove ownership.
The point of my story.....if the car had been stripped for parts we would have got nothing back except the engine. We couldnt prove the few parts that had been removed were ours so we lost them (Wheels & seats).
The legal people were convinced that if it hadnt been ringed nearly complete we'd have got nothing back. More chance of being kept complete on a logbook, surely better than turning into a mass of separate parts never to be seen again?
its now a road rally car here in Wales by the way
