  • How much does a mk2 rally car cost to build ?

Not including engine, I would love to rally a escort and build it up from a normal car, I would do all the work myself or with help from friends etc.

Engine choice is up to me and it could be anything tbh, I can always change the engine at a later date once the car is built and I'm getting some use from the car.

How much does all the structural stuff, cage, suspension etc etc etc cost to get me ready to do some rallies ?

How long is a piece of string...!!!!

Not an easy answer to that one, it depends on what spec you want and how deep your pockets are.

The car alone will cost at least £4000 for something that is quite solid, but they all need some welding what ever you end up paying.

If you go GP4 then the fabricated parts inc arches, spoiler, tunnels etc £1,000 to £1,500

Roll cage £700 to £1,000 depending on spec

    Complete GP4 axle £4,000 to £5,000

Each front corner for GP4 £2,000 (each side)

Crossmember, anti roll bar, steering rack, joints etc £700 to £1,000

    Gearbox, 4 speed clubmen £1,200, ZF £5,000

Seats, belts, heated windscreen, poly windows, other trim, fire extinguishers, etc £1,500 to £2,500

Have an extra £2,000 for the things I've missed, consumables etc and you wont be far from the total cost.

This is only my estimate, others might think differently...!!!!!!

Never had a lot to do with rally cars but what I will say is look at how much one is to buy and it will probably cost u as much if not more to build one. It always seems a good idea to build something to save money but I'd say 9 timed out of 10 it will cost more than buying something already built

Cheers for the detailed reply, that ads up to say 23k with brakes etc.

I've seen some cars forsale at 15k and some for 120k so the range is massive.

I'm trying to see how it can be a 100k+ build, I've been looking at various parts on websites and say 45k would have you all the components a milling diamond2.

There must be some gp4 owners on here you will have a good idea of cost ?

A full grp4 build cost all depends on what you want.

BDG engine inc vat = low end £19800 / Top end £30k

Shell fully prep'd and painted = Low end £10k / Top end £15-20k

          Gearbox - ZF = £5k / sequential inc all bits £10k

Fully floater back end = £5k

          Suspension = Bilsteins £1.5k / Reiger £5K

          Brakes = low end £1k / Top end £2k

Wiring loom inc gauges switches etc...= Proper job £1.5k

          Springs/link bars /lowering blocks/top mounts/ interior bits £1k

          Seats belts etc = £1.5K

          rims and tyres = £1k

Petrol tank, oil tank, radiator, etc.....£1k

          Braided lines etc £2k

Any other bits I've missed off £2k

          So.........is that how much I f@*kin spent

So yes, to build a good grp4 with all the good bits on can be between 50k & 80K

          Hope this helps
I always laugh and smile when people say Group 4 then talk about thing that were never homologated in your case "Gearbox - ZF = £5k / sequential inc all bits £10k". Yes the ZF was, but sequential was not.
Sorry it's just my pet hate.

my Black beauty 'clubman car' was going to originally be built to a Group 4 specification but in the end i decided to keep it (the silhoutte) as an RS2000 but with the best competition bits i could afford etc etc to make a good spec clubcar, ........and that is what it is with just over £30k spent on it.

As a guide, i could have done all the 'hoses' in braided stuff using jubilee clips (Fuel) and brake lines using cheap kits.
Having a fear of Jubilee clips coming off i went the proper JIC route and used teflon / ptfe stainless steel 316 spec hoses.

the difference was cheaper braided hose worked out at about £90.00 inc connections etc.

JIC Teflon / stainless hoses totalled £700.

pretty much the same can be applied to all components and consumables.....

i guess what i am saying is it depends what type of Quality you want in the build as this will result in your final cost

Historic Motorsport have got a brand new shell for sale just needs seats/harnesses Oh and Engine/gearbox.
All for a snip at £35k but does give you an idea as its a proper Gp4 Historic spec shell

Ok then maybe not full gp4 rally car but what about something competitive to rally and do hillclimbs in that you could still rally at most events, so full weld in cage, seats, belts, fire system.

                Engine wise a cosworth duratec new 2.3 280 hp is 12k, 220about 7 if I remember correctly.

Also what do you class as a fully floater back end ? Not sure on escort terminology lol

Also what do you class as the shell fully prepped ? Wats in the shell, fully seam welded, cage, ???????

                  Atlas axle 5k
                  4 arches 400
                  Rad and fan 400
                  Pedal box 350
                  Polycarbonate windows 300
                  Front suspension kit 4k
                  Shaped fuel tank 300
                  Guards 350
                  Hydraulic hand brake 200
Strengthening brackets and mounting brackets 300
Gp4 fabrications Tarmac spec kit including cage and loads of other bits 2.8k
A shell for all the above bits 4k

                  Gearbox 500

2 k for the other bits needed ?

So roughly 21k for all the car ?
                  Ten an engine choice.

                  Engine wise
                  A millington diamond2 24k all in

                  Cosworth yd 2.3 250bhp 10k
                  Cosworth yd 2.3 280bhp 12k
                  Ford duratec 2.0 145 bhp 2k

Plus say 2k for the ecu, ancillarys that need to be altered exhaust.

I'd look at what you want to do properly with it and build it to that spec.

What I mean is it easy to go and chuck loads of money at something and tick of all the shiney bits list, then to find out that the car cannot compete in half the stuff you want to and the ones it can, it's seriously outclassed by much more specific, focused machinery.

Silly things like Perspex in rally cars is fine, but plenty of hillclimbs/sprints turn their noses up at it and then put you in a higher class where you get trounced on by a Pilbeam!!

Result - 1 empty bank account, 1 ****ed off owner, 1 car for sale!!

Often if your specific, you can limit your expenditure.

Does it have to have arches (not loved if you want to go road rallying but you can still use a unarched car on the stage)?
Does it have to have a BDG/YB/Millington?
Do you want to do historics? (No point puting in a Duratec then)

I'm building a car for touring and European event's, but I can still use it on the road and hillclimbs/sprint's/trackdays.

It's still not a cheap build but I've kept the spec applicable to as many areas as possible within cost. EG, Pinto with either a Quaife 4 speed or a BGH Geartech type 9, Wide atlas with a ZF diff but still on 9 inch drums. Not 4 linked but has antitramps and a panard rod. Seam welded shell but fully trimed (it comes out) and a bolt in SD cage inc diag and door bars.

Its never going to win any pots straight out of the box, but I can develop it as I go along/funds allow and I'm out there, not struggiling for the next 5k for my ZF box.

To my mind, there is nothing wrong with a strong 1600 cross flow in a well sorted shell and a english axle. Yes, it still wont be cheap but it also wont be breaking the bank.

Look up KAS750 on here for a good example. He can use that for anything and it will still be on the money in the 1600 class.

Sorry correction, he can use it for anything bar road rallying (in this country due to arches and stickers).

And I wish my basic box cost £500, think mor like £1k plus for a quaife kit then fitting or nearer £1800 for a BGH. New prices.

£50,000+ and then crash into a tree the 1st event !!!!!!!! . An old shite heap 4 door with 150bhp will do the job for £4000 but you won't win anything . You're still rallying though , lol .

Built my Roth rep (grp4 replica) myself to keep costs down, it's running a pinto with 220bhp on twin 45's and the spec is well suited for the targa series. It cost me about 60k AUD but I would hate to think how much it would cost if I had paid someone to build it
