  • MK2 RS2000 Story so far

    1980 RS2000 FOL 257V

It was restored by the previous owner some years ago and flat fronted along with a Group 4 tunnel being installed, front chassis wedged for strength and engine bay set up for a Cosworth turbo. With that the battery tray was relocated to the boot, radiator support panels cut and additional brackets welded to the slam panel and cross member for the intercooler but never finished

Car came set up with World Cup X Member, Quick Rack, Anti Dive Kit, Bilstein Coilovers with roller top bearings

Back Axle was built by R.A.C.E and has been shortened and braced, LSD and heavy duty shafts

Brakes are currently Cosworth Spec 280mm front vented discs and calipers with Cosworth disks and calipers on the rear

Car as it was when it arrived home:

What next: strip the shell and see what we actually have hidden under the paint and return it to droop snoop. Been very fortunate and located 2 NOS stock RS front wings, slam panel and radiator support panels. It’s a thought cutting the existing off as they have no rot just and just been modified.

Time to start. In the pics you can see the attachments welded onto the slam panel and front panel for the intercooler as well as the radiator supports being cut back, hence the replacement panels as I am going ST170 Zetec.
Spot welds removed from front panel / inner wing connection

Drivers side done and back to bare metal, next fill the additional holes in the inner wing which I can only assume were for the intercooler

Passenger side now, same issue, no rot but additional holes for intercooler

Passenger side holes now welded up, battery tray in place and flash coat of etch primer

Rest will need to wait till I get back as I work away from home and wont get to touch it now till May.

Now for the engine. Professionally built and installed low mileage (30,000) ST170 Zetec Engine, Strip, Inspect and rebuild carried out by Troy Robinson at Northampton Motorsport with 213bhp once completed on the rollers
VVT was operational in the Focus and kicked in at 2600RPM, Rev Limiter was set at 7800 rpm with a soft cut out, hence the trail on the map

    All new parts as follows:
Jenvey 45 Throttle Bodies, linkages, Pipercross airbox and filter
Emerald K3 management System and ECU Loom
    Ford Racing Injectors
Piper BP300 Camshafts, H/D Springs & Shims with variable Exhaust pulley & Vernier Pulley
    Head Gas Flowed and refaced
Inlet manifold match ported / flowed
    Block refaced and completion gaskets
    Machined piston inlet pockets
    Cylinders honed with competition rings
Crankshaft lightened by Knife Edging and balanced
Pumaspeed RS Billet Steel Oil Pump Gears
    Steel Rods
High Flow RS Steel Water Pump
Aluguide big end / main bearings
    ARP Bolts all round
    Competition Cam Belt Kit
    Ford Racing Plug Leads
Engine as was in the focus which was rapid

Engine now waiting patiently for its new home

That’s it for now, this is not going to be a quick turnaround due to my work commitments and will probably be vintage by the time its done and not classic

Did you know FOL258V is out there somewhere? The bog standard, Signal Yellow, RS2 in mint condition was at the RS Owners Club National Day a few years ago!

That's right! I was stunned when I saw yours on here, for a moment I thought it was the other one! Quite a novelty having their plates so close together! Your making nice progress on yours and it will be good to get it's beaky front reinstated!

Over a year and what have I achieved, well stopped smoking so that was a good start but as for the car did manage a few odd jobs.

Battery tray removed as she will now be relocated in the boot and then stripping the dreaded under seal underneath

Tried to update photos on here last year and gave up however tonight managed to update some photos in the technical section so for those of you who don't use turbosport here is an update on how far I have got since the last update.

Engine trial fitted so I can get the gear-lever hole on the right place as I am going zetec

                Gearstick hole sorted

                Raiser plate now in place

Now for the rest of the panels and paint

                Underside now done

                Now for some colour

On the trailer and on her way home

A year has gone past and not a lot has moved so will update again with fit out progress but still a long way from ready

Original plan was battery in the engine bay but on reading the various forums regarding the need for an expansion tank I went for the safe option of fitting one which meant something had to give so it was the battery tray. Tried to relocate it in the boot in such a way that it wouldn't stick out, painted her black so she would blend in with the carpet.

Catch up time. Home in the garage and ready to start bolting it together

                              Under the bonnet

                              Chassis wedges in place

                              Floor

                              Splash panels

Patiently waiting to be put together

first all bolts, nuts, screws and various bits and pieces back from the electroplaters

Next get the headlights and backing plates sorted, all brackets powder coated and light ready

New outer headlights thanks to Graeme from GS Escorts

Inners were a different story so remove the glass from my own and sent them off for Chroming

                              Glass now resealed

Now to put them all together

                              Now fitted

Next it's the back axle. This was built by RACE a long time ago and sat in a box, shortened atlas, LSD and strengthened

Plan, going cosworth discs on the back but retaining the tramp bars

Halfshafts, brackets and discs ready to be put together

                              All bolted together now

                              Discs on

                              Quick look at the LSD

Now it's throw on the springs so I can line it up and tack on the tramp bat brackets

Tramp bar brackets sent for powder coating and poly bushes inserted

                              Now to line them up

As I am going cosworth handrail bracket modified, basically an old one reversed and fitted just to give it that factory look

                              Axle on and brackets tacked

Now time to weld them on

                              Now fitted

                              Looking tidy

                              Next update, engine updates
