  • Tax Exempt

My RS is 40 this year, first registered 1-03-1978. How do you go about sorting the historic log book out?
    cheers

    Hope the following helps

Vehicle tax exemptions and MOT exemptions for vehicles built or first registered before 1983.

Vehicle tax exemptions and MOT exemptions for vehicles built or first registered before 1983.

Change the amount of vehicle tax you pay when you change your vehicle's engine size, fuel type, or if it becomes exempt from vehicle tax.

Yes, I'm in similar situation as you, car registered April 1978! Have to wait until next year, and yes, a rolling 40-year for road tax exemption.

At least my modern Fiesta is tax-free!

I'm slow, so it still isn't clear to me sorry! My car was first registered in February 1978, am I tax exempt this year or not please? I've read both January and April as being the key months of first registration and determining exempt status?

DVLA Quote "You can apply to stop paying vehicle tax if your vehicle was built before 1 January 1977. You must tax your vehicle even if you don’t have to pay.

If you don’t know when your vehicle was built, but it was first registered before 8 January 1977, you can still apply to stop paying vehicle tax."

              Seems clear?

Possibly! But why do the March and April 1978 owners above say it will be next year? Presumably it will roll over to 1st/8th January 1978 then, so all three of us will actually have to wait two more years?

(My maths isn't good, I could well be missing something!)

My understanding at the moment is that if your car was registered 1st Jan - 31st March then you have to wait till the next year to get tax free

                  BUT

I also believe that if you can prove manufacture upto Dec 31st then it will be tax free in April ???????

Hopefully this may change this April with new rules but who knows

MOT rules change and we still not been told what 40yr+ rules apply - lol

In the MKI and MKII Escort world it is by the 5th and 6th letters of your chassis number
