  • KUH - Project FiEscort - Zetec RWD

Thought it about time I puts some pics up of my latest build, ive had this shell for a good few years and I did sell it a few months back but ended up buying it back, I regretted it the day I sold it as the shell is proper mint, only one small bit of rust on the floor near the chassis rail and that's it, the rear arches, sills and boot floor are all good, so was an ideal shell to cut up.....

How ive done the conversion to RWD so far, started with an escort mk2 world cup cross member from that I knew where to put the chassis rails, I bought the threaded weld in tubes from an escort so the cross member bolts from the underside, im using a 2litre silver top zetec lump, ive got the engine mounts from retro-ford, was hoping the engine wouldn't have hit the rear bulkhead but it did, I could have moved it forward but that would have meant making up my own mounts, so cut out the whole bulkhead and making new by starting with an escort rally car large tunnel to clear the type 9 5 speed and rs bellhousing.....

This bit I was going to keep hidden for a while but nah couldn't keep it secret any longer ive cut out both inner wings from the mk1 and bought replica inner wings from a mk2 escort and welded them both in to the shell similar to what ford did on their 'Fiescort' I had to trim a bit off and reshape them a bit, not as straight forward as I first thought, ive got the rs top plates to weld in next before I can weld in the strut brace, got a set of standard mk2 escort legs to trial fit so I can see what wheels will fit, not planning on using wide arches on this car lan o making it look more standard on the outside....

On hold at the minute as im waiting for the Ashley manifold to be delivered before I can finish of the bulkhead and tunnel, gonna use an alloy rad for a mk2 escort ade for a zetec so been making the rad supports for that this morning just need to cut a recess into the front box crossmember and add a few gussetts and the front is almost all fabricated, onto the rear then.

Hope you like, hoping that this project isn't going to take as long as my last one

    Chris

Done a RWD fiesta years ago just left the inners and used mk3 escort struts, sierra hubs, extended escort rack and track control arms and Capri anti roll bar as a fiesta is about 4" wider track than a mk2 but it all fitted together with mk2 escort chassis legs fitted and boxed out to meet the fiesta inners, used an escort tunnel and fitted all the fiesta brackets to the escort rear axel (should have used a Capri one but didn't have one) it drove nice and handled better than my escort until it went sideways then you were facing the wrong way before you had a chance to correct it!!!!! also know of a RWD rally car sitting in a garage that hasn't turned a wheel since the late 80s its based on mk2 escort parts too

Bit more progress, bought an alloy rad from radtec - made specifically for a zetec into a mk2escort, made up some rad side supports similar to an escort, shaped and swaged, Ashley rwd escort manifold wouldn't fit so decided to put a grinder to it this morning, so that finally fits just needs one of the primaries joining together and its finished, can finally get on with finishing the bulkhead and the tunnels

Bit more progress, tunnels are all welded in, just a bit more to cover up the exhaust manifold, cross braces fully welded, need some tubing next for the seat rails so that can be welded in, borrowed some mk2 escort legs of a mate so I could try on some wheels, only wheels I had were the 8x13s I have on my other mk1 - and was surprised that the 8s will fit under standard arches

escort front anti roll is on order so that's next to fit need to weld in some tubing in the front chassis rails for them to fit, only upper rs top plates to weld in and then weld on a strut brace, then engine and box can come out and I can fully weld the engine bay and then get the car back up on its side to stitch weld the under side, that'll be all the front end sorted just rear end / axle and roll cage to sort out after that

                        Chris

Thought all mk1 fiesta wings are the same front panels differ on bumper mounting holes single hole on small bumper cars. Flat top strut towers in pre 80 as well. Maybe big bumper fod guards came with square hole for end cap mount ?
