You don't use it for competion ? Do you Alan ??? So your recovery service will bring you home if the worst happens ?
When I've done track days I've always driven it there and if I killed it pick up the phone .
Driving it up and down the country is half the fun for me

              Recovery

My son and I did a track day at Donington park last year. My son binned the car and filled it with gravel. The track towed it out to the public car park. My son rang the RAC who he is a 3 year member, they charged him £120 to tow it 12 miles and place it on his drive, not mended! Be warned, you are not covered for any motoring event.
He has lived and learnt. By the way dad (that's me)' took 3 weeks to get him mobile again.

              Best Regards

That's what I liked about RSOC organised track days , if you had insurance thru the club you were still covered on track " with a higher excess " but it was a big load off your mind if the worst happened

Its not to do with engine size. more to do with vehical type. What you need to know is how much weight you want too pull, thats the trailer plus weight of car on trailer.
I use a Touran 2.0Tdi. Its rated at 1600kg tow capacity with a 1800kg capacity on less than 15% grade roads. Trailer is a brian james at 420kg plus car at 1100kg. So 1520kg total, but it will be more like 1700Kg with all the bits. But you are allowed 10% on the weight if your checked.

Mondeo 2.2tdi's are good for tow capacity at up to 2000Kg.
Tiguan's can do 2000 to 2500kg. Most 4x4's are higer rated. Have a look at the caravan club towing guide, but ignore the 80% rule

Got my transit tipper stuck on a job recently- front wheels sunk down as far as the wheel nuts so thought I was right in trouble. Customer came along with his XC90, roped up and pulled me straight out. No wheel spin, no bother, I was well impressed. Was a 2010 2.0 diesel- reckon that would make a great tow car..
Also, I know of an old boy who does plant hire- he uses a Daihatsu Fourtrak 2.8 Tdx and has done for years. Tows anything anywhere, no problem. Great tow car apparently..
