  • Our hobby ?

What has happened to our hobby? When a S/H rear number plate light for a MK1 Escort on ebay makes nearly £100, Yes I realise I am old ( retired) I remember a time of excitement going to a scrapyard and buying a 1500cc engine for an Anglia or later a 1600cc Capri engine for a MK1 Escort, 6 dial dash, recaro Capri seats, 4 branch manifold all on the shelf. Now I am trying to rebuild a rough MK1 Escort and every time I need a part it is bank loan time am I becoming a boring old timer, yes I am going back to the garage and scrape some more underseal and weld another patch

    Internet has happened!
In the old days it was totally acceptable/normal to ask and pay £10 for a 2nd hand light. Today when someone is prepared to pay £100 for one everyone can see that happening and that £100 becomes the new norm.

I have always loved visiting scrapyards since I passed my test in the early 70's and if I looked hard enough I could find parts as good as new for a true scrap price. It was only at the beginning of the week when I went for a spin past all my favourite scrapyards and most have sadly gone. I was lucky during the early 90's when I was restoring my car, I could always find something for it. I'm glad I got it done when I did because it's a real challenge to find the right stuff now. A donar car is of great help if you can find one, but the best way to go these days seems to be to buy the best car you can afford.

I was reading on one site today that an Allegro owner decided to give a fellow Allegro owner a part for his car being that someone else had given him a part that he needed, he was just passing the compliment on. You may laugh that they are owners of Allegros, but I have to say it's refreshing when it's not just down to money when helping a friend out.
