  • Malta.

Just back from a great holiday in Malta. I was hoping to see a few Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts whilst there but disappointed not to see one. In fact very few old cars of any description. 2 Morris Marina's, a Mk1 Transit van and I think a Mk4 Cortina and that was it. I assume they are all tucked away or all over here.
I did see an immaculate 2wd Sierra Cosworth on a trailer near to my hotel but no time to get a picture as it passed me.
Is there anyone from Malta on here who knows the answer to the missing Escorts?

Yes I know. I first went there in 1976. Full of old cars. ancient buses and the roads were atrocious. You took your life in your hands at every junction. The way then was to toot your horn and just go, it seemed who tooted longest and loudest had right of way. This was my 5th holiday there and what a difference.
There is massive investment from the EEU going on at the moment and many new roads and buildings being built. It seems the cars to have now are BMW, Audi,Lexus, Range Rover, Jaguar or Porsche. It seemed every other car was one of these. Obviously a lot of people are making a lot of money. Most drivers now actually signal their intentions before the make the maneuver. I suppose they don't want to dent their expensive new cars.
It's a great place for a holiday though.

There used to be a car meet every weekend at Golden Bay by the Radisson, i was last there four years ago and there was still escorts everywhere but people where getting wise to their worth over here. There was a clean van in St Pauls Bay on the forecourt of a petrol station along the main drag but the fella was talking telephone numbers even by todays standards.

I am Maltese but I have lived in the UK most of my life.
My family moved to back to Malta When I was a child for about 4 years. My late father was a mechanic and a fairly good panel beater.
I have some great memories of cars that my dad tarted up for customers.
I still go back every 3 years or so and they are getting less and less. There is a museum in a place called Qawra that has a lot of classic cars and they do race at the old runway (Taq Qali). When I do see the the odd Mk1 Escort they are exceptional but not many Mk2s. I also follow a page on fbook called Malta transport and they do put some nice motors on there.
            Cheers Chris.

There is a classic ford club of malta headed by Salvu Debono who tend to meet up every weekend, alot of times for charity. I'm still in contact with him and some others who are part of the club.
Last time i was over there they organised a show in Zebbug for me and a run out on the following day in which i was given a mk2 fiesta xr2 to drive which was just brilliant.
There are still alot of classic cars left but they now seem to treat them like us and cherish them
