Can't agree with this, it's all gone very over the top and very likely will get worse. Parts are now at very silly prices and I would think again if I was starting out to look for a classic. It's ok if you already own the Escort that you want or you have plans to sell it and make a thick wedge for yourself, but sad that they are growing further away from the ordinary persons grasp, as it's him I've seen own these cars for many years, and some great characters there are! Eventually they will be owned and possibly hidden away by the rich and wealthy, and the ordinary guy in the street will not be seen at the shows anymore. It's all about what the Escort stands for, history etc, and not the high quality or best engineering that can be found in other cars. Every Tom, Dick and Harry now wants one, makes other makes a better buy for your cash!..............that is if you are not looking for an investement to hide away!Originally posted by alancdavis View Post

Between dealers chancing their arms and somebody seeing a car selling for x and only seeing pictures on the net and think there she'd is worth the same.
Then you have speculators who try to bum up every car in order to make there's worth more and make a quick buck!!!

Porsche have been setting the price bar and (i think) have peaked. Prodution numbers of older 911's was very high however, people are still paying huge prices. I dont understand how "special" they all appear to be.
The same is happening with the ford escort. Older, low production models and special 'RS' & T/C (etc) models will and are demanding high prices. Provendance will add to those prices as preceive value.
Really they are all just lumps of rotting metal, but I buy into it ....... often, when im replace chunks of rotten and bent metal on my "special" MK1, I wonder why. What is so special....

This is a good point, it's getting stupid, as a side question, my insurance renewal paperwork landed on the door step this morning, my 76 2 door is currently insured for 4.5k, which I am worried is far to low, but I just don't know what to value it at.

No interest from banks so lots of people buying classic cars , adding £10k or more to the price and putting them up for sale and not caring if they sell it or not and happy if they still have it in 10 years when it could be worth closer to what they are asking now. Some of the prices being asked are totally ridiculous as a direct result of this in my opinion.Comment

i think there are a few other scenarios that need to be considered here
firstly the modification scene, there are a lot of people spending a lot of money modifying the cars for silly reasons like making it a rally replica or similar, they spend an absolute fortune doing it, then they are not happy for whatever reason or fancy a change as soon as theyve done it and put it up for sale at silly money, then some silly fool pays the price because he cant be bothered or dosnt have the know how to do it himself,
personally i wouldnt buy one of these cars, while the original parts are no longer in production to keep the cars standard, i dont see the aftermarket manufacturers making things long term, and when they go wrong, you dont know whats been fitted and whats compatable to replace it with, but each to their own
the scenario at the top, creates a severe lack of original cars available, hence when you do find one, it has a high demand in that bracket, forcing silly prices, this also creates a problem that original parts to support these cars also go up in price
all that coupled with the work that has to go into welding and painting, as nobody sprays a car how ford did back then, everyone wants a paint job of today or better, that comes at a cost
and this is why i feel the costs of tha cars are rising
when you look at the other makes of classic, the low end low cost market are usualy a wolf in sheeps clothing, (mutton dressed as lamb) as these cars are not really desirable, therefore not worth doing properly, if they were done properly, it would cost far more than their worthComment
