View Full Version : Rothmans Escorts....THREAD ;)
Just watched the story of the mk 2 escort, and the rothmans cars were awesome in tarmac spec....
Does anyone have any decent images of the ones with the Massive rear arches on...
Also has anyone got/watched this

Vatanen Touch.....worth it ?
None of the Rothmans cars were ever in the "full" tarmac spec of the 1979 works tarmac cars designed by Alan Wilkinson. There is an item in the new issue of Classic Ford on those cars and it probably goes as far as anything ever published in commenting on the legality under the then FIA Appendix J regs, estimating 4inches of lenghtwise body "adjustment"....

Vatanen Touch is one of the best films about for the Mk2 RS era... glad to see it's out now on DVD although a shame Duke couldn't add some extra stuff in with the package :(
Also worth seeing are some of the Castrol productions like 'Twilight Zone' http://www.dukevideo.com/products/4039.htm which shows Vatanen battling with Mouton/ Blomqvist (A2 Quattro) in the Black Sutton prepared Mk2, which I think was one of the last Mk2's he drove before moving to Opel.

Put me down for a place on the tour bus !!
An appropriate thread to show off my Rothmans jim jams LOL. Managed some years ago to aquire these and a spare set of genuine team overalls.
One set (shown) are Hannu's and the other set is unknown. They are a couple of sizes bigger and have had the blood group and name badge removed.
Shame I cant fit into either set :geek:

Joe.
nice joe i bet they would fit me then ? lol lol lol
dingy i would be up for a trip would be nice to see the legend himself
"Full" tarmac spec (ie the widest arches) is the operative word. Sutton did not build cars to the ultimate 1979 "Alan Wilkinson" Boreham tarmac spec. Reading the current issue of Classic Ford might give an indication why! (were scrutineers by then more knowledgeable as to what was permitted under Group4 regs??). The black car driven by Vatanen in UK in 1982 was an R.E.D. car (originally a Sutton/Rothmans car/registration but much changed and possibly when appearing in tarmac spec a "new" car carrying the same registration?).

His autobiography 'Choice of Champions' is also worth a read........
If you want to organise a tour Dingy speak to David Holmes @ Historic Motorsport - DS & his team are great supporters of the RS Owners Club and go out of thier way to help us out with display cars at national day every year. We made David Sutton an honoury member of the club a couple of years ago :brilsmurf:
Cheers mate i will be contacting them this week to arrange a visit ;)

RichM, fell off me chair when I read that Dingy didn't have the Vatanen Touch, just recovered from that shock just now! Every Old Skooler should have the whole ******ng series from both Sports Seen and Duke.
Videos like "A little bit sideways" , "RAC 1977" and "Coup de Grace" everyone should have.
Sutton didn't build any lightweight Monte-tarmac specials as KL says, he was very conservative with his spec. But to my knowledge he was the first to use the Gartrac Monte Carlo arches on his tarmac cars, before that there where just the normal tarmac arches or the very crude made arches for the 1979 Monte cars and also GVX489T as used by Coleman on the 1980 Circuit. He then also used the very-high-revving BDG with about 275 bhp. (sadly retired because of a broken oil-hose).
If you want to read a nice article on tarmac-cars then find a very old CCC mag from June-1982 or look at your old Rallye News mag (if you have them) for an article by Andy Dawson which featured the 1980 Circuit-Coleman car. I build my gp4 to the same spec as this car.
Graham Robson states again in this months Classic Ford that the 1979 Monte cars had their body lowered on to the chassis. I don't think they did this, it's very easy to think they did because the engine isn't mounted on the normal mounts but bolted directly by special mounts onto the chassisrails and ofcourse you can weld those brackets further back on the chassirails if you want and lower the engine and the same time.
I asked Bill Meade if they had lowered the complete body of the 1979 cars a few years ago at a Boreham show and he said they didn't.
If you go the David Sutton please say hi to Pete and John O'Connor from me; we visited them some time ago and were made very welcome and got the complete tour of the museum and workshop plus some interesting stories from the past!!
Grtz, Leon.
I got the coup de grace mate ;)
Be loads better if they were all available on dvd format, video's really do suck...
Will be ordering the touch next week ;)
other vids to look out for : vatenen touch,a little bit sideways, story of the mk2.
tour of mull in car. and the site for rpm videos ireland loads of tarmac mk2's.
id really like to take a trip to suttons if it gets aranged!.
Dingy,
I thought a genius as you are would have had at least the Vatanen Touch!
I have had my copy for years, Ari is still the best IMO! The way he had the MK2 Escorts so sideways and still had some sort of control was amazing. Another vid/dvd you should find is The Vatanen Touch Too! Even if he was driving a Manta 400, I don't think anyone had a car sideways over a grid in the rain like he did. Check it out!
How much are you lot paying for the DVD's? :cyclopsani:
