View Full Version : Mk2 Mex Resto (Major)
Thought i`d put some pics up of the Mk2 Mex that i`m in the process of restoring. Didn`t think it was this bad when i bought it, i thought it just needed a little TLC and Minor welding...
How wrong i was...
So Far, i`ve replaced;
The front 4 floor pans
Both Inner Sills
Back Valance
Plates Galore!!
And i`m jus in the middle of repairing the n/s/f inner wing, before a new wing is fitted
Same at the drivers side i would imagine!
But as once was said, i`ve started, so i`ll finish
Heres a pic of the inner wing before carrying out any work, more pics to follow....

Know wot u mean, mines stripped out the mo, requires front floor pans, think the inner sills will be ok. Once u start chopping at the rot it just gets bigger and bigger!!
You think, oh its only a small hole, a little plate should cover that..
OH NO... It turns out to be a foot square plate! (a bit of an exageration i know, but not far off)

he he he - I did warn u lot not to start a de-rust a MKII (see my pics)
lost count how many dustpans full of rusty metal i've swept off the garage floor!!!
Just started mine also ,first job was to clear the dead rat off the floorpan. its going to be a while before its back on the road lots of panels etc  but my welding skills should be quite good by then.

QUOTE: "I've started so I'll finish..." Be prepared; I ended up replacing virtually everything forward of the windscreen, the underneath.......and ended up virtually a broken wreck (mentally and financially) at the end of it. As Dave once said - "All that Shines, most certainly is not Gold......" Good luck mate with your resto anyway!!!
good luck mate ...you know it will be worth it :bounce:
Cheers guys, i`m loosing heart at this moment in time.
Mind you it is cold!! :brilsmurf:
When the weather takes a turn for the better then i`ll re-start.
After a brief interlude i`m back on the case!
I though i`d never get back into it...
Removed the engine and box today, the wiring is a real mess. I think Stevie Wonder wired it up. So i have all that to sort out. Once the strut top is fitted the wing can be fitted and it might look something like.
Heres a few pics i took today. I should have some more tomorrow. :bigsmurf:

jez looking at that ST dont think I would have bothered
I didn`t know it was that bad until i started...
Ah well... i`ll plod on... :cyclopsani:
Took the engine and box out yesterday and removed most of the crap under the bonnet. Think i`m going to have to make a new loom cos the old one is all over the place, been chopped and tapped all over.
The strut top and n/s wing have now been fitted...
Start the o/s. Removed the wing today and it doesn`t seem as bad as the n/s, rust wise, but time will tell...

Cheers for the encouragement... I need it!!
Yeah i`m planning on putting the authentic tops back on when its finished...

floopin' 'eck M11! Don't forget to change the name of the Vehicle Manufacturer in the log book from Ford to M11RF when you've finished! And I thought MY Escort was the pits...
Yeah buts when its done - WHEN - It should give me great sense of achievement.
Although, i wont dare drive it anywhere incase something happens to it lol

Take heart!
I started in 1991 and am still restoring! The latest bit was a replacement of a part I repaired in 1991 which has rusted during storage before the car ever got back on the road!!
During the resto I built (yes, literally) a house, got married, changed the country of residence twice, got divorced ........
I hope to have this done before 13 years dasadrew... lol
I`m cracking on with it, but after ripping the strut top off the o/s i`m starting to think that maybe i`d have been better getting a complete front end...
Its bad - real bad!

Can`t do anything else on it today, need to get a turret top early next week.
Not just a turret top but a pan as well by the looks of that, ****ing hell! What is stopping the strut from flying up through the inner wing and hitting the camera lens,You got it on a jack?
Nice tread on the O/SF tyre though :clown:
|Yeah, course i got it on jack Chris... lol
Got the pan(turret top) and the legs that run down the side today. But after a bit more chopping and twisting, i`ve decided i need to find a scrap mk2 to chop the inner wing out of... I thought the otherside was bad, but this side takes the biscuit! :colors:
New inner wing nearly 300 quid!
I may have to put it on hold while i decide on the next step... Scap yards here i come!

Just a thought as they are the same from the bulkhead forward !!!!!
Hmmmm... Thats what i`ve been thinking of doing Dave. But TBH i dont really have the space to put anything!
I`ve got all the parts from this project filling one garage
I`ve got this car in my garage

Your lucky you can find a Mk II in the scrappies, Since the house prices in Edinburgh went through the roof our scrappies are to POSH to keep "old rubbish like that". No money in it for them. Plus most of them rotted away years ago with our most excellent weather, Even the Stock car boys are using the last of the sierra shells now.
you can have this for £50 if you can find transport or pay postage

Cheers LOL. Look on the bright side you did at least get a tyre with good tread on it if nothing else. Just make sure you don't end up with a bit welding spatter burning it's way through or that elusive bit of offcut metal stuck into it
heyop bro , well i got him into this mess , thou i did mention the floor was a concern .... 5 coats of underseal , or should that be undersale .. :geek: , ah well the weldings nearly done now , so just the arches to fit, a bit of filler , and the bits n bobs to clean up
Haven`t posted for a while, had a virus on comp and had to format my h/d... been cracking on with the mk2 though...
Both front wings and both outer sills are now on ...
Just pulled the heater matix and motor out today to straighten the bulkhead and do a bit MORE welding... :geek:
Decided that i`m going to have it pained yellow, and i`m getting some forest arches for it... Ordering next week, when i get paid ;)
Got the old man on with some filling, most of the welding is now done, just a few places that need patching now.

Ordered my arches today, they should be here tomorrow :smash:

Pained floor just in passenger side to see how it looked with minimal prepping, doesn`t look bad... Going to get some more seam sealer and seal the seams up tommorow, should look o.k when its been sealered primered and painted, now i know i dont have to do that much prep work inside... Thank God
Got the arches today aswell, there not as good a fit as i thought, i thought that you`d be able to put them up to the existing arch and they would sit right in the right place... Not a chance...
Need some measurements if anyone has any of how much lower than the swage line they fit, then i can get them in right place :cyclopsani:

Keep it going M11! I really feel for you - when I started a basket case like that years back my mates pulled me from the car and forced me to scrap it before I got obsessed! (but then I was actually doing another Escort at the time)

I have to say there did not look alot wrong with the real outer arches ?
seems a shame to chop them off but hey too ate now LOL
the alloy arch where did you end up getting them from if you dont mind ? and how much?
keep up the good work
Brian
PS thers no fear in you is there LOL :drunken:
The old arch on this side wasn`t too bad on the out side but it was covering 2 rusty dead as a nail arches that would have rusted through give a jam jam full of water, especially when i`ve had it painted too... Dont want no bubbles coming through...
Got the alloy ones from Rally Design. £200 for set, cheapest place i could find.

p.s there is fear, but if i fcuk it up, i`ll have to buy a new quarter or do some more plating... more plating... argghhh, best not mess it up now!!!

What colour are you going to do it in the end?
Yellow i think, i`ve seen differnet colour cars with forest arches on and the only few i`ve seen that i think look good with them are white yellow and red.
Yellow is my 1st choice out of those.
But its gunna be some time before its painted so i may change my mind :cyclopsani:

top colour choice....... then i would say that...he he he
Been busy with the inner arch the last couple of days.
Its a lot more involved than i 1st thought... :58_90:
The whole inner arch has to be plated, some thing which i was a bit short sighted about...
But the o/s/r is there now :dunce:
So its just the other 3 to do, although the front 2 wont be half as hard as the rear ones... :stuckin: I hope!!

bit laborious, but I got my underside clean by:
painting on engine cleaner (Gunk type of stuff) with an old paint brush
waiting for an hour or so
scraping off with a plastic spatula (usually available in paint departments of DIY stores)
finishing off the remaining bits with Gunk soaked rag.
It took a while, and I tackled one square foot or so at a time, intermingled with other jobs. This method also enables you to get the stuff off behind those brackets and sections. Any way - it's a mess!

going well keep it up should be finished for end of the month :drunken:
End of the month July 2005??? :geek:
Got the studs today
Had to remove the hubs to fit them as they are too long to fit when the hubs are in situe...
So one of the front hub bolt on the n/s decides to snap... Brilliant!#
Set me back an hour at least trying to get the stud out of the hub...
Why do you never have any sharp drill bits when you need em, and why do you break the good ones?
SODS LAW!!
The o/s/f some one had snapped a stud before in it and forced another thread in it... So that had to be re - tapped...
Removed the half shafts at the rear to fit the stud, again there wasn`t enough room to fit the in situe...
Not a bad job really though.
Still need to buy some Nuts to match the wheels and hold them on correctly but, i`m using the
old ones for the time being... :brilsmurf:

A bit more filling done today too... :flower:
Still need to find a nut to hold the hub on n/s as there is only 3 in, or re-tap it a different thread...
thats looking good keep up the good work :cheese:

Its in the garage mate... i`ve seen your after one, dont really know how much they`re worth tho... :geek:

Got the engine steamed off and cleaned up some of the alloy bits, removed the rocker cover to paint.
Found its got a nearly new clutch in it, RL21 cam - new spray car and lifters, its really clean in there.
The guy who i bought it off told me it was a 2.1... Suppose we`ll have to just wait and see, but the engine has recently been stripped down and over hauled as the block has been freshly painted so maybe he was telling the truth?

Any particular reason for primering the strut tops???
The car was painted before i got them Kev so i had to fit them after the
paint job, so they need painting yellow again!
I know i should have got them before it was painted... Silly Boy! :laughing6:

Bumper on... Seems wied seeing the car WITH a bumper now :laughing6:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/M11RF/HPIM1319.jpg
Center console in... spent ages on this, making it fit with the big tunnel in,
and positioning the switches in it... still more work to do on it!!

mark get some locking nuts put on the rear brake brackets as they will come undone.....
I`ll put some spring washers on then if you think thats the case Paul...
The thread is a funny one as its threaded through the axel too, so i dont
have any spare nuts to put on...
Would imagine spring wahers will do the trick, yeah?

na i think locking nuts will be better then you know they will be ok
you don't want that falling of .....

20-02-2005, 09:02
or you could wire lock them............drill little 1mm hole through the corner of each nut , you will need to buy proper lock wire and a pair of locking pliers, but you should be able to get a set for £25, the you could go mad and do the whole car.......
I think i`ll lock them up Lee... a little easier!! :laughing6:
Been busy since last pics.... But not much to show for it... as usual!!
Full exhaust is now mounted on.
Handbrake cable has been modded and is ready to fit.
But this has been my work place for longer than i care to remeber now!!
Bloody wiring! :geek:
Oh yeah and you`ll probably notice the n/s inner arch is all black and smokey... Had to cut it back out and re-weld it... Had a few problems with clearance when the wheel was turned left... it was catching!!!
So cut it out and made more room, so the inside and under the arch needs painting again now... i`ll never be ready for Cumbria at this rate!! :blackeye:

Looks brilliant mate, its come along way!!!
given me new hope of making mine nice and rust free!!
:geek:
Ordered a Viynl Roof from Aldridge Trimming the other week...
And there is no more to say than... :boom: what a stinking pile of poo!!
Basically, its 3 pieces of viynl stuck together - THATS IT! Not even any glue "i`m sorry sir but we aren`t allowed to send that in the post"
No trimming, no nothing - surfice to say, its back in the post on its merry way to Wolverhampton :boid:
Also ordered the windscreen and rear screen seals... On the web site under RS2000... asked on the phone - yes they are the RS2000 ones -
THERE THE BLOODY GHIA ONES! :banghead:
So not a very eventfull week!
Fuel pipe has come and is waiting to be clipped into place...
Done a few more bits and bobs... Its getting there i suppose!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/M11RF/3-3-05.jpg
So thats put you off a vinyl roof then?
No mate... i`m going to get a pro in to do the job...
It`ll be the only job i`m contracting out... So to speak :geek:
£160 and he supplies and fits it.
At least it will be done right too... :pottytrain3:
Maybe if i did it, it would have turned out o.k... but its a lot of money to waste, when for an extra £60, its garaunteed... :wav:
Fuel lines plumbed up, new washers on carbs, and it now runs!!
Was well impressed, i`ve srtipped the loom back to bare basics and made it up myself,
took me ages but now its nearly there, just got the indicator set up to wire in!!
The jobs are gtting less and less now!
Need to get some seats pretty sharpish as the fishnets have long gone!
So if you know anyone with any Cobra Imola 2`s in black and blue let me know!
Cash Waiting!
A pic of my brother filling up the tank the other day... Still need to give him the £4-50
for the juice!! :geek:

Looking good Mate  Your going to need a bigger fuel can tho to keep that tank full :albino:
Well... i got myself some seats... Cobra Imola 2s
But they didn`t fit too good, so as a bit of an after thought (there have
been a few of these now) i decided that i needed a frame to sit them on,
so i`ve have to weld a frame in for them to sit on and ruin my lovely
floor. :violent1:
But they do look nice in the car :yeah:
Also made some strengthner plate for the gear box and some floor plate
for the foot wells. fuel line and rear wiring in place, still need to wire the
dreaded indicator flasher unit up some how... But i`m not sure about it!!
My brother has bought a mk1 escort and i`ve been doing work on that
with him... So thats why i have`nt got much done!! sin2

Waiting on the doors, bonnet and boot painting now.
Gunna hopefully pick up a few bits at Donno this weekend... A dash top,
some door cards(alloy) and maybe some window seals??
Thens its basically ready for M.O.T time... Then off to Sheffield for the
roof fitting.
Oh yeah... The wheels need painting too... i`m sure there will be
something else too!!
Hope to be at Cumbria, if all goes well... Might not be quite "finished" but gunna try my best to be there!! :geek:

Well... i might make it as a politician with a comment like that... idn`t make Stamford... was no where near! Did go... but not in the Mk2!! :geek:
The teething problems i thought would be quite easy to sort have started to turn into a nightmare!
Had to get a new pair of rear callipers as they wouldn`t hold the handbrake good enough...
I have an oil leak from the top end... fitted new camshaft oil seal and rocker cover... its still leaking...
No matter what i do i can`t get the temp gauge to work...
Car is/was spitting and coughing, and generally running like a bag of shite!
Other bits and bobs that have caused be late nights!!
BUT... taken it up to the test center today for the re-test and its passed!!!
Going for the roof doing on Tuesday
In the meantime i still have all the problems to sort out!!
The joys of mk2 ownership...
Its a bit shakey and bangy to drive too... will have to go steady on them bumpy country road with these springs on!!
