View Full Version : mk2 mex resto.
car arrived today(thanks dave) so had a quick look around it before rain stopped play.genuine 1978 mex,in bits. my plan is to build it as a good useable road car.has a 1.6 and 4 speed with it, but wil go 2litre with it.
FRONT END- needs new front panel, wings, heater bubble, inners very good, small repair to a-posts, cross member bolts sorted(stripped in chassis)
MIDDLE- small repairs to front foot wells. bottom of both doors need attention. rear of sills need a repair.
REAR-needs spair wheel well and petrol tank well sorted.rear panel needs slight attention.
overall chassis looks ok, but will probably find plenty of work to do.no timescale on it really, will see how it goes.
few pics for you to wet your appetite, off now to check the resto section for insperation.
cheers, mark.

good luck with it mate
Vinny , i had trouble keeping up with a standard rs2000 at dono nat day and mines 2.1 on 45's too ...lol
Damn them standard cars :geek:
day off today so made a start. started prodding and picking at rusty bits.
cut out some rusty bits to see what panels i will need. worst area i have found is the petrol tank well to inner rear wheel arch.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/1978rs2000/DSCF0315.jpg
dropped out the back axle to get at rear end.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/1978rs2000/DSCF0313.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/1978rs2000/DSCF0314.jpg
went to my local motor factors to see about panels. suprisingly he had in stock a front panel and wings.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/1978rs2000/DSCF0317.jpg
dont plan on starting the front end until i have the back end finished, but just ordered the lot while i was there.(in stock on monday)
ordered 2 wings, front panel, slam panel, rear panel, lower rear corner and petrol tank well. all for £170. which i thought was ok?the wings he had in stock had a few storage dings on them, so ordered new.
says he sells quite a few escort panels, so there must be a few about locally i dont know about.also he says he can no longer get hold of mk1 wings, and mk2s may go the same way.
the only panel i am struggling for is the scuttle panel. cant find a new one anywhere.
so panels will arrive monday, and i will start welding later next week.
cheers.

just in case you thought i was slacking.........
couple of weeks off work due to sprained ankle,so hobbled into garage to make a start on the welding.
patched up both sides under rear seat, and inside rear wheel tubs.also done a n/s outer sill. quite time consuming making templates and cuttting steel. dosent look much but a good day and a half in there.just got the welds to clean up and i will make a start on the petrol tank and spare wheel well next week.

quick update........
after a few weeks pulling my hair out with a welder that was constantly playing up, bit the bullet and went and bought a new one so i can crack on. :cussing:
wanting to get the rear end finished up. was going just to replace the lower rear valance, but rs-joe came up trumps with a complete new ford rear panel.
off came the old one........
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/1978rs2000/255f48f3.jpg
on went the new one...........
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/1978rs2000/657309fc.jpg
got half a petrol tank well from express, the other half from hadrian.(neither company made a complete section!) so welded them together...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/1978rs2000/b597b2b2.jpg
then cut out all rot from wheel tub and made a plate for it.......
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/1978rs2000/ffce0517.jpg
pleased to get the worst welding out of the way.just got to tidy up welds and seal them tommorrow. then i have a little bit to do on the floor, then i can sort the front out, which should be fairly straight forward,i hope.
i also picked up some 15" rfx last week.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/1978rs2000/DSCF0499.jpg
i must say, my old welder must of been on its last legs, as the new one was a dream to use. cheers. :thumbright:

excellent job, i'm booked in to learn mig welding at my local college in evening classes. 10 week course, 3 hours every thusday from 6-9pm. doesnt start till april 20th though, bloody thing has been booked solid for ages, lucky to get in on the last april course, otherwise i would have had to wait till september....again.
i'll be too scared to do it for real on a car no doubt
looking good mark, keep the pics coming
lee, you will pick it up in no time. this is the first car i have done properly myself. lots of tips and guidence from my brother who was a welder for a living. once you get the hang of it , its no bother. a good mig helps too.
good luck.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/1978rs2000/DSCF0539.jpg
fitted new tyres, 195/45x15 pirelli and pushed her outside to turn her round. rear ride height at standard at the mo, will lower it a bit once its all back together.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/1978rs2000/DSCF0547.jpg
got her in nose fist now so can start on the front. had couple of small repairs to do on the front corners of the foot wells.

quick update on this weeks work........
finished up welding on front end.
passenger side wing went straight on and lined up bang on. drivers side
though was a mile off, and took some time setting everything up straight.
front panel on too which was a good fit. fitted scuttle panel and heater bowl too, which was a bit of a pain.
all the welds need ground down and smoothed off, which will be done another day, as i have had enough for now....
at least it looks like an escort again now though.

on taking the wings off, was it difficult to do? i was trying to take the wings off van, but the spot welds on the a-posts are a bastard to cut off as im cutting into the a-posts with the angle grinder.....wat way can i get around this? .......
the car is coming on nicely, love the wheels.....what colour are you going with the car? :D
aaron, wings were already off when i got it.
as for spot welds, you need to get a spot weld drill bit(machine mart £4)
and drill through them. there shouldnt be welds on the 'a' post. mk2 wings have three bolts inside the wing, and one on the bottom corner where it joins the sill. only welds should be along the top. i will get a pic.
aaron, this pic from inside wheel arch looking back. 3 bolts here and one outside on the bottom.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/1978rs2000/DSCF0599.jpg
these are the little bolts. 10mm self tapper. get them from any motor factors. bought 10 this morning . 13p each.

car was collected on wednesday, and taken out to my brothers, where its getting painted.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/1978rs2000/DSCF0670.jpg
started to prep it and put a skim of filler over where i have welded in new panels.( lower rear quarter and outer sill)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/1978rs2000/DSCF0672.jpg
first coat of primer under bonnet.

quick update on car........
got it home and back in my garage. got my window rubbers out and found the quarter glass rubbers missing and the rear screen rubber badly perished. front rubber still good.
had no choice but to try some from east kent trim, even though i have heard bad things about them. got a window fitter to come round and pop them in for me. the east kent trim stuff looks good to me, fitted well and you cant tell the difference to the original ford rear screen rubber, but the rear quarter ones have a slightly different profile in my eyes , but still look good. fitted east kent boot seal too.
got the rear wiring loom out, and put it in position. was dreading the wiring part, but turned out to be quite simple. the wires and conectors all end up in the right place when laid out, and can only go to one place to plug in.
fitted rear lights, and petrol tank. mounted facet pump underneath, in-line filter and new pipe up to the engine bay, held along the chassis with p-clips. in the pic, the pump looks close to the axle, but i have checked it every where and it cannot come in to contact with anything.
sorted out the rear ride height with some blocks while i was there, and fitted handbrake lever and cable.fitted some n.o.s rear mudflaps to finish off rear end.
fitted some interior trim bits, rear shelf, rear quarters, c-pillar trims and seat belts.
next job is to start on the front suspension/steering next week . still got boot ,bonnet, spoiler and doors to collect from painters. (my bro) he has done alot of work on the door bottoms, welding in new metal, as i gave up trying to find new doors that werent going for stupid money.
progress will be a bit slower from now, as i am on a new shift pattern at work, bit will try to do a bit when time/family/money allows.

it is a standard colour. ask your local paint supplier for ford diamond white. every brand should be the same shade.you will also need the 2k activator too.
anyway, my recipt just has a part no.(a352-1)diamond white 2k. on it. i remember it had "pro-paint" on the tins. was from the bmf group.(hadrian)
get some pics of your car up then.

looked a very good shell to start with, keep the good work up !:)
just about finished her now. last few little jobs done...........all the trim is now finished, just needs a bit of a clean up. i made another bracket for the exhaust, as the peter lloyd systems dont have a bracket in the middle. was only held on by the manifold and the back box. so made one up for the middle to give it a bit of support.
fitted washer bottle, thought about moving it inside or to the boot, but it ment stripping back the wiring i had re-taped up, so inner wing it went....

look'n nice that !
treat it to some 7's next spring..........;) :D
as its now 99% done, i will finish this resto post off.
there are a couple of bits on the car which i am not 100% happy with. its never going to be a show car, it will be driven and used as much as possible. i wouldnt of done all this work to leave it sitting in the garage.
looking back to when i first got it, i didnt know what i had let myself in for. but there was no way i could afford to buy a good finished one the way prices have gone. i have spent a fair chunk of cash on it, but i was able to buy bits each month as i went along, not shelling out thousands in one hit to buy a finished one. i have kept a track of what i have spent, and i havnt done too bad. everything on the car has been done by myself and my brother. he saved me alot by painting it, and helped with the welding.
i have never welded in anger before, but its not to bad once you get the hang of it. jobs i was dreading wernt that bad. like the wiring, didnt have a clue but it all just fell into place.
the car was done on a budget, looking for bargains second hand where possible.
if anyone out there is thinking of doing one, go for it. have a go yourself and save yourself thousands these restoration places charge. its really not that hard.
finally, a big thanks to all who supplied parts at non-ebay prices...some who gave me parts for free.!(you know who you are:) )
roll on spring.

How are the brakes working? I'm looking at vented/4 pots ( proper, not princess ) at the front, and a fostek disk conversion on the back, using a bias pedal box. However, I've had a number of people suggesting that the back brakes aspecially are not too good in daily use, due to the knock off caused by the puny wheel bearings, and that bias pedal boxes aren't too good either.
This car is my middle age crisis ( apparently ), and I really want to get all the bits I didn't have when I were a lad ( come to think of it, I used to run chrysler 180 disks on the back of my mex and I don't remember any problems there ). This may be clouding my judgement :)
What're your findings??

i have no front brakes on at the minute so cant comment. its a very popular conversion so i cant see there being a problem. dont think you will notice any pad knock off unless you are going for serious competition use.
ask in the tech section and im sure someone will help.

Still not sorted with one then??
NO,kev sumthing il be doing over the winter.
CheeRS MARK for the info
final final post as it is now 100% finished.
noticed in retro/classic ford that rally-design had mis-printed the price of a big front brake kit. they had put the price as incl vat instead of plus vat.:D . so i got on to them. they checked the mag and he spoke to his boss and they honoured the price.(saved about £70) went for 4 pot radial mounted midilites on a 285mm disc. fitted them but could not get the system bled. traced it to a broken master cylinder. got the bias set up with help from martyn(rs boreham-cheers). took it out for a run on sunday, did about 25 miles to check everything and it went well. brakes have good bite, but are kind of either off, or on. not much in-between. but very powerful when stamped on.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/1978rs2000/DSCF0951.jpg
rear suspension has now settled itself and dropped a bit more, and the tyre was catching a little going over bumps. had to roll the arches a bit more but its fine now.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/1978rs2000/DSCF0949.jpg
took it for m.o.t. this morning and it sailed through. only thing was pass headlight needed a slight adjustment. tester was convinced it should have a rear fog light, as i told him it didnt. we went through the vosa books and i was proved right, as its only after 1980 it needs one.
so thats it finished, totally wrong time of year though, but i can borrow some trade plates and have a run when i feel like it.
cheers all.

Congrats Mark. Looks great. Same brake set up as I have. They will end up squeeling in the end :p Now's the boring bit though....Winter, and having it finnished. Don't do as I do and start thinking of bits that you don't really need for it just for something to do........Can get expensive

kev, took some advice off ders for which calipers to go for. the dynalites squeal and rattle as they only have one pin to hold the pad, where as the midilites have two.suprised at how light they are. but as you say, nows the hard bit, with it just sitting there. will give it a run now and then though.

I was just a tight git and bought the M16 replacement 4 pot kits. Seriously light and have good stopping power. No dust seals though and are prone to squeeking/rattling the pads. Apart from that. Great  Just need the rears now.

Looking good there Mark, Dave and me were talking bout this the other night and it turns out I do know yr Mex. It belonged to a guy called Andy, who was a member of the old bournemouth RSOC.
There's a pic of it in a 1990 Rallye News in the New Forest with one of our members Chris' old Mexico (picture of my now X-pack is above it).
I'll see if I can scan it for you if you like.
