View Full Version : My new MK2 RS2000
Got the new RS home on Friday evening, drove 200 miles in it and it just felt perfect.
I got numerous doots, thumbs up and waves from different cars and vans as I was coming back home, it really made my day.:)
It has had 2 owners in England, 1 in Ireland, 1st reg Jan 1980, currently 50,700 miles all verified and backed up with a lever arch folder full of everything including the original bill of sale, even the original £1000 deposit receipt, all correspondence from the dealer, servicing, parts, MOT,s tax discs, RSOC letters, insurance valuations, photos, all original handbooks.... everything !!!
Its completely standard, I've a few things I want to do to it to have it sitting perfect. It has a small crack on the bottom of the windscreen, drivers side inner headlight is cracked and a small rust bubble on the very bottom of the passenger side rear arch. Other than that bodywork is near perfect, interior is perfect, boot is like new, rims have been refurbed and are perfect, engine bay will clean up nicely .
Spent a part of Saturday sorting out some lighting (or lack of) issues. I had 1 working side light, and 1 working headlight sometimes. After checking the bulbs I found one was blown and one had a bad connection, then the fuses, relay and earths were checked, eventually I had NO working headlights and NO working electricals inside the car.:o
I checked each fuse again and some of them were that old that even after a clean they were not making a proper connection, so after 7 new fuses and 1 new bulb all is working happily.
Plans so far.....
Fit a new exhaust, possibly stainless.
Fit a new windscreen
Fit a new inner headlight
Start cleaning underneath to remove any loose underbody sealant, treat with POR 15 and the seal again.
Paint axle, springs etc
Engine bay tidy up, paint rocker cover etc
Repair small rust bubble on rear lower arch.
Carry out a full paintwork correction to remove any slight scratches, swirls and oxidised paint.
Get it back on UK reg plates.
Drive it and enjoy it.:)
A few pics taken after its first wash.

Thought that was a decent price as I've seen them for £200+

Love terracotta......one of my favourite colours.
It would however benefit from original mudflaps I reckon ;)

Looks a very very nice original standard RS2000. Some very nice original features. Pin stripe around rear lights, Carpet clip in boot floor, etc etc
I did not see that car before, and I would have liked to have a good look at it close up when it was down south. Best of luck with it.
Thanks Paul.

Got a little bit of work done at the weekend.
After a wash I decided to remove the bulkhead pad and see if there was any hidden delights behind it.
I have to say I was more than happy with what I found.
The bulkhead pad has seen beter days, but it all came off intact with just a few bits cracking off the edges.
Seemed to be a bit of a dirt trap, but nothing that wouldnt wash off.

Any other grubby areas in the engine bay got the same treatment, after any electricals were covered up.
Autosmart Alu cleaner was used on the inlet manifold and brought it up much cleaner too
Mudflaps are on the list too, have you got any ?
No sorry I don't.
Try and PM Errol off here to see whether he has any :)

Update.....
Spent the last week lying on my back underneath the car getting it all cleaned up. I removed any loose and flaking underseal and any areas that had a slight bit of rust were dealt with. I painted on some POR 15 paint onto any areas that were prone to rusting. Im still trying to get that paint off my hands and face:(
Black Hammerite was painted onto other areas like the axle, drums, mounts etc.
After the paint dried underneath was Waxoyled and then various different wax sprays, graphite sprays etc were directed into anywhere they would squirt :)
I reckon if Ford used as much wax in the first instance a lot more Escorts would still be on the roads.
I didnt take many pics, and they're not very interesting, but heres some under the drivers side arch before.
I reckoned it was in pretty good order before I started on it anyway

I've been busy too getting a few bits and pieces together.
I got a full set of new Valeo Cibie inner and outer lights, I needed 1 inner light but will replace both inners, the outer set will be stored away for a while. I also got another outer set with mounting rings so I'll remove the rings to attach to the inners.
New outers and inners
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r215/geoff-tate/MK2%20Escort%20RS2000/DSCF1483.jpg
Second hand set of outers and 1 inner light, inner light is a bit rusty so might be re-chromed at some stage in the future.
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r215/geoff-tate/MK2%20Escort%20RS2000/DSCF1487.jpg
I still have to fit the windscreen.
I also got a Sportex exhaust to replace the leaky one, still to be fitted though.
Plugs, plug leads, air filter etc all to be changed in the next few weeks as well
I decided to share a couple of old photos of the car taken in the 1980's
These pics are in the history folder along with receipts, dealership correspondence, insurance valuations RSOC renewals etc.
The first owner, MR A Davies, he owned the car from 1980 until 2000.

Great to see a car with some old photos dating back so far . Can you answer a question about the inner lights. I have a pair that are chipped but the only new ones I can find for sale don't have any mounting lugs on them. Are you able to attach the chrome tings that the outers have and mount them using these?

I've a few more nice pics too, just have to get them up yet.
The chrome rings from the outer lights will attach the inners in place, I haven't done mine yet but have checked that they'll fit, will fire up a few pics next week when I do it.

yes,you certainly can,i have done it myself,it means you have 4 sidelights on the front if you use a link wire, all you have to do is get a pair of chrome rings from the outers and fit them where the inners would go,the outers are still available from cibie.I got mine from the local motorsport shop Scarborough racing developments, regards Gixer1000.
Thats very nice and a lovely project which doesnt need alot done. Nice one

The inners must be available somewhere as well although I couldnt find where.
The outers and inners that I got were advertised on Scoobynet and OMOC and I picked them up for £82 delivered to the house. I reckoned that was a bargain.:)
The Morette twin headlight conversion on classic Scoobs uses the same lights, as does the twin headlight Opel Manta's

Another wee update.
I removed the old exhaust (centre section and back box) the back box is in very good condition but the centre section was proper FUBAR. It was welded, filled and taped together.
I got a Sportex 2.25" exhaust a few weeks back. The first issue with fitment was the hangers at the back. I didnt want to weld any new brackets and hangers underneath, nor did I want to start drilling holes to get it to fit. I wanted to use the original hanger, so I cut off the top of the bracket on the Sportex, drilled a hole through each side of the bracket, inserted a stainless bolt with rubber sleeve over it and slid the rubber hanger on, then tightened it up firmly.
Old box removed, top of new exhaust bracket modified and rubber connected
(Cut off's are at bottom of first pic)

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r215/geoff-tate/MK2%20Escort%20RS2000/DSCF1680.jpg
Fitting the centre section to the exhaust manifold at the front was straight forward enough. A few cm's were cut from the new section and it was then joined to the existing shortened flange on the front pipe that comes from the manifold.

Cheers, to be honest I don't took out very often, it was at a few local classsic shows around Tipperary.
The previous owner waited until it was 30 years old before letting the authorities know he had it, as it cost nothing to VRT it then.;);)
first of all nice car,and good luck with it,secondly whats the note like off this exhaust is it loud inside car etc, where did you get it,thanks.

I got it from Peter LLoyd Rallying.
I must get a sound clip of it as Im on a couple of other forums and others have asked too.
I'm probably not the right person to decide whether its loud inside the car because I'm used to an 05 Impreza STI with a 3" downpipe, not cats and a Blitz NurSpec system that would make your ears bleed.
But I would say it is louder now than standard, but not much.
Thanks Gary, that's interesting, why did you decide against buying it then ?

Another little update...
I got an inner light courtesy of Ian (specialbuild). It was originally my intention to replace all the lights on the front but chose the easy option and will keep the rest of the lights for some time in the future.
At the same time I removed the windscreen and repaired a small area underneath the windscreen rubber where some rust bubbles were beginning to show. It had been previously repaired in this area but there was no point putting the windscreen back in without sorting it.
Screen removed by the 2 foot method, area sanded and treated, then etch primed and sprayed.
Wiper arms were also rubbed down and resprayed, new blades fitted too.

I'll be at a few of the shows this year.
Its beginning to annoy me now not being able to get it out on the roads yet.
Full 12 months MOT from today.:D:D
Sailed through its MOT first time, I was only advised of a small amount of play in the drivers side steering rack, so that will soon be removed and tightened up.
Wont be long now until its registered, taxed and on the road......yehaaaa

u be happy once u have everything done to it.
But, do you ever have everything done to them ?:D
I'll always see something that can be fiddled with and tidied up a bit.
Took a spin down to my local Vehicle licensing office in Downpatrick today, filled in a V55/5 form to register the car up here in N. Ireland, another form for HMRC to notify them that it was imported from the south, an ID check form and various other bits and pieces, MOT, insurance, license etc.
Should be another week or 10 days until its back on the road and on its original plates again:D

a very nice car.:)
a very nice car.:)
Thanks
Got a little more work done over the weekend.
I removed the rocker cover to replace the gasket as it was seeping oil.
Then removed the exhaust manifold to replace the 4 gaskets as there was a noticeable blow out from one of them.
When I had them off I painted the manifold and rocker cover.
I had bright silver VHT paint and black VHT paint and neither looked right so I mixed a small amount of black wth the silver and produced a metallic grey. I also replaced the manifold to downpipe gasket as it was also leaking slightly.
Airfilter removed and rocker cover in need of rubbing down and painting.

While I was working on it I also took the opportunity to put the original plates back on, theses plates were given to me by the previous owner and are the older type aluminium backed plate with the supplying dealer mark on them so I assume they are also the ones which were put on 30 years ago.

I used silver VHT paint from an aerosol and mixed it with black engine laquer in a cup until I was happy with the colour. There is no sign of it burning off so far.

I just tried out a new glaze called Wetglaze 2.0. Unfortunately not on my RS2000 (still in the throws of welding repairs), but it brought an extra shine to my other cars, then sealed with wax afterwards. I'm looking forward to being able to detail my RS as I hate all the messy dirty welding and grinding stuff. :(
Looks tremendous , some cracking photos too :D

I would usually use Poorboys Blackhole or White Diamond depending on which cars Im detailing. Lately I've also used Chemical Guys EZ Creme glaze which I think is also very easy to apply and remove.
As a sealant I use Poorboys EX-P and finish off with Valentines Road N' Track wax. As usual , getting a good finish all depends on the preparation work and the level of paint correction achieved.
I'll do a full write up on the products used in the next day or two.

I've got Blackhole too, but recently got the Wetglaze 2.0 and don't think I'll be using the BH anymore. BH fills more, but once you've got rid of the swirls, etc then the better shine of the Wetglaze does it for me. I like that you can put wax or sealant on top and then put more wetglaze on top of that if you like it doesn't strip the LSP.
I'll be interested to hear what you use on your RS as I've been detailing more current cars with very hard paint, so a different kettle of fish to my black cellulose painted RS2000.
As many will know, I bought the RS in November and spent a while over the winter months sorting out a few areas of the car. All the time I was dying to get working at the paintwork but it would have been silly to do things arse about face so I had to wait until now.
Car was washed with AutoBrite cherry snowfoam in the foam lance on a Karcher pressure washer, Megs Hyperwash and 2 bucket method with lambswool mitts.
Arches had previuosly been cleaned painted and waxoyled over the winter.
Door shuts de-greased with Tardis and G101 a few months ago, all trim lines, window rubbers, petrol cap, all panel gaps, bumper edges etc were all sprayed and brushed to remove any ingrained dirt, then all hosed off.
Car was dried off, then Tardis applied to dissolve tar.
Iron Cleanse from Orchard Car Care was then sprayed on and left to dwell for a few minutes, any embedded metallic filings, embedded brake dust etc. then turned purple as it dissolved and was then hosed off before the car was clayed with Bilt Hamber soft clay.

Kestrel DAS polisher for applying glaze and sealant
Menzerna Power Finish (PO203S)

After the glaze was buffed off some sealant was applied and allowed to cure for an hour.
Blue Hexlogic pad used to apply the glaze with Kestrel DA polisher
Black Hexlogic pad to apply sealant, the buffed off with Eurow microfibre cloths
Chemical Guys EZ Creme glaze applied, then buffed off
Poorboys EX-P sealant applied, then buffed off
Valentines Road N Track wax applied, then another coat applied the following day.

looking awesome :)
Thanks for all the comments lads on my bodywork detail, really appreciated.:)
I was really happy with the way it turned out and the level of correction I achieved.
Still plenty of paint left to work with in the future as most of the swirls were removed with the first pass on the polisher, some of the deeper scratches took a bit more work.
Anything the bodywork needs now will just be careful washing techniques or a simple pass with the DA polisher and topped regularly with plenty of wax.

Hard to beat the tried and tested products and a bit of know how.:)
I've also been contacted by the second owner of the car and had a very interesting conversation with him on the phone. Apparently the pics I posted of the man outside the Red Lion pub were him, I originally thought the pics were of the first owner. The rest of the colour pics are from the original owner.
He was also able to tell me that he originally seen the car at a classic car show at the NEC in the late 1990's. The owner of the car had lent it to a friend of his that was the manufacturer of Carcoons to put on display inside the bubble.
It would love it if someone had a picture of that ..

Nothing more exotic than Autoglym Glass polish. Does exactly what it says and is simple to use.

Just picked up the car today from Winston Henry's near Markethill.
I asked him to change the gaskets on the carbs, service/set the carbs, set ignition timing correctly etc. and anything else he thought necessary.
As soon as I started the car it even sounded so much better, and 500yds down the road I had a big smile on my face again, it now feels like a completely different car.:)
