Ok..Ok....I said I'd never build another one again!
How wrong I was.
So here it is..... the beginning of the 5th one.
It's a full blown Grp4 Tarmac spec Mk2 Ford Escort.
I've got the Maxi-Skip outside to throw all my money into....that's what it will feel like ....but hey, you can't take it with you...can you now :D
Keep tuned in for progress.......
In the beginning.........

That looks amazing, is that Monte Carlo arches on the rear?
they are group4 monte carlos,
them lads do a good job on the shells dont they mate,
they did some work on mine earlier this year
richardpaulh
16-11-2011, 18:25
Yep....Montys they are....and yes they did a good job.
I was begged and battered into building another one(Her in doors:rolleyes:) but on the proviso that I didn't have to do all the body work.
SD Developments did the fab/paint work and I'm enjoying the build.
It's great not getting your hands covered in crap....haven't broken a nail yet :D

So just a bit of info to keep everyone in touch with what I'm doing.........:)
I used to build these things 20 years back spending every waking hour in the garage on a budget you couldn't survive on today.
Getting back into it(......pushed by my other half, yes she's a petrol head and it's going to be her car! I've found things are 10x the price.........like rocking horse poo to find and I've generally started to really dislike Ebay!.......I mean really dislike!!!!!
The build is pretty much straight forward..........
1. Shell has to be full historic...(better to have the best start with all the correct bits welded on)...there maybe a couple of things on there that could be changed if needed.
2. Engine is defo a BDG !!!!!!..........HOW MUCH ???????
3. Axle is fully floater .......Fostek
4. Gearbox....now this is where I'm going to be a little of the mark. The shell will take the famous ZF but just for a little fun(may let her indoors do the odd hill climb) the 60G is going in. She says I can't have another motorbike so maybe this will feel similar :D
5. Suspension is all 2 1/4" billys and good brakes to match.
The rest will come as the build progresses but it's a suck it and see thing.........but i much prefer old skooly things.
So that's the insight:cool:
I'll be giving as much info as possible on the build as I go along with reference to parts, stockist, suppliers, settings and specifications, along with any other little goodies I encounter on this epic journey.
Please feel free to ask and please feel free to tell me things too......
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the build and hopefully we'll all see the car next year when she wins something, or wraps it around a tree
Thanks
R & S
Looking really good mate, nicest build ive seen in a while. Look forwrd to following the rest,

Looks stunning, hope you dont mind me asking but what sort of time has it taken to get it to the current state?
Looked like a VERY decent shell to begin with so guessing that saved a good chunk of time?

Thanks for the comments......:)
It's probably taken around 6 months to get to the stage of building, and to be honest other work commitments have hampered the last 2 months of build. I wanted the car to be ready for engine and gearbox around December but this could be Feb/March, but hopefully the car to completed by end of March.
The shell was good and straight so yes.......a good starting point.

very very nice...i like the colour of the inside:cool: and out:D:cool:
The outside is Ford Frozen White..........It's worked out to be a very clean crisp white and it's a good base for the vinyl's that she's designing.
The interior is anthracite(The old SRI Cavalier bottom strip colour)......I'm so glad she choose the colours.........I'm also really impressed the way they turned out.
Awesome, I can only dream of having something like this, its going to be one of the best
R & S.
Car looking great just as you said it would !!. Some very nice detail. Thanks for the mention about the axle. It looks at home with all the other shiny bits.
I'll email you later with a couple of questions.

Soon..Soon ;);)
A little update........
Waiting for blasted / powder coated / painted parts.....should be this week.
Waiting for re-chromed / nickel plated parts......should be next week.
Just ordered the brake hose & fittings / fuel hose & fittings / Oil hose & fittings.........A small fortune!
Ordered a complete set of window rubbers.....
Waxoyled usual internal chassis sections..........(Must remember to do this during a heatwave! - cold workshop + waxoyl = camping stove under tin :D It works!)
Completed the extinguisher lines, fitted the bulkhead fittings, unions and run the pipework.
Removed standard rev counter in RS dash and fitted a transition piece to accept 80mm dia electronic rev counter.......
And last but not least.........started on wiring loom drawings (I'll list all the components that I use i.e plugs , sockets etc...... and re-work the electrical drawings to suit).
I'll take some more photo's this week and post up...:D:D:D:D

Said exactly the same to the wife!
Hillclimbs and shows....:D
Every time she takes a peek  the more she comments on how careful she'll be driving it!......yeah right.
Me thinks rev limiter set at 2000 revs max! :D:D:D
Good move , just use a hand painted 4 door for rallying (banger racing in the woods against the clock) . :D

Stunning! Great that you're sharing build/buy info too. Takes an awful lot of background work even before buying, just to get the correct parts that actually fit :( Building and buying is half the fun. It's like xmas everyday at my shop at the moment with mine and Mike the Panels bits turning up:D
Dry sump system fitments are freekin expensive , although we have found a couple of places on ebay that are nearly half the price of the Goodridge fitments. Mike reckons they're far easier to fit the hose too also, i'll find out in the next few weeks lol!
Love it, that company have done a very nice job of the shell. A few nice touches in there too. Nice one, look forward to more updates :)
Richard, I built an historic GP4 car two years ago and used 811 series ends and it's very expensive and a ****in nightmare to work with!! We only found out after we'd bought it that the 811 series pipe needs to be reamed to fit the ends and without it will take forever and you might also damage ends like we did. Speak to Goodridge and ask them for a better alternative, the important thing is you want something that doesn't sweat.

Your not kidding....
I've used the 811 series before and yes.....it's a nightmare to flare and fit the ends.
The reason I went 811, it's the safest in cab and to keep all the fuel fittings in black. The rest i.e oil/breather is traditional Blue/Red.
Cost.....is a lot!
and she's paying........:D:D:D

p.s On the outside of the cab...boot/under bonnet you use the 200 series hose but with the normal black fittings. This means on the inside you only use 2 runs of the 811 series with the 4 fittings to suit :)

Yet more bits arriving.....Who said it was Christmas?????:D:D:D:D
Regarding the powder coating....I found a small workshop in Sheffield who does a fantastic job. He doesn't go mad with the powder so it's not the thick covering, I've just dropped of the door handles which should be perfect when he's finished them....:D
Powder coated parts......

So...Back from 3 weeks in sunny warm Oz to cold wet UK and a car in desperate need of finishing :)
Happy new year to all....hope we all got the bits we wished for:D
So back to the build......
Part order came for the fittings and braided pipe. Got this lot for a snip at the retail price...well chuffed.
Coloured for Oil & breather pipes.......
Black for Fuel lines........
Hopefully the outstanding parts will come before the weekend so I can have a lovely day fitting ends and shredding my fingers on stainless steel braids!

Think it's time for quick update ;)
Well after returning from the warmth of Oz land to the cold dark corners of Northern England... thought I'd better do something on this car.
Started to run all the braided lines - covered the pipes in duck tape to stop any unwanted filing action from pipes touching paintwork!
Just got into getting most of them done when whoops......I broke my ankle playing Ice Hockey!
Anyway....here's a taster photo of what I've completed. Will try and get some more posted tonight :D
The black 811 fittings are a dream to work with and look the Bo....cks against the red and blue. :jumpy:

Thats a cool set up there :cool:

The bracket is from Rally Design - I cut off the regulator mounting lip on the top and rounded the corners. I then drilled two holes near the top so I could fix the 'T' fitting. The fixings in the body work are 'Riv-Nuts' so it's all a nice neat job.
I'll put up some more pics today ;)
Nice car, love it. Shame about the ankle.....lol. Is it Reccy you play?

So here we go :D
Excuse the photo's ...... they're off my I-Phone
Back end nearly finished...... Bumper on, rear lights in, her identity revealed, heat shielding around exhaust slot.....
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc407/richardpaulh/IMG_0324.jpg
Now the bumper turned out amazing....the story goes - I bought a brand new old stock chromed bumper for £50, it cost me £10 to de-chrome to nickel base and a further £20 to powder-coat in satin black....perfect!
The bolts are pretty much standard coach bolts(not threaded all the way) and I turned the heads to suit the originals and painted them. The nylon bar is from E-Bay (dia 20mm) and cost less than £4 for a 300mm length..
Bumper -

Bumper fittings -
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc407/richardpaulh/IMG_0326.jpg
The front quarter bumpers were powder coated and fitted with the indicator bodies and new front lenses. Again the bolts and nylon spacers were as above.
Front quarter bumpers....
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc407/richardpaulh/IMG_0342.jpg
Fitted the rear light bodies and lenses.......These were NOS parts and cost me the earth!.....but worth every penny.
Rear Light clusters....
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc407/richardpaulh/IMG_0323.jpg
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc407/richardpaulh/IMG_0325.jpg
So...onto the rear axle.
I completely changed my mind in which direction to go, so, I changed out the springs to multi-leafs (140lbs) and dropped it by 2 inches. Slipper blocks on the front and full 6-link system. The 4 link arms are 23" 3/4 long and the watts linkage bars are standard straight ones. All the bars are from Gartrac and the quality is amazing.....tig welded, plated and powder coated.
The handbrake cables are fixed with a bracket I made up that secures to the rear ally stiffening plate.
Rear set-up....
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc407/richardpaulh/IMG_0331.jpg
Awaiting brackets for handbrake cable mtgs....
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc407/richardpaulh/IMG_0329.jpg
Door handles - I did the same as the bumper....bought some old chromed handles, de-chromed and then coated....finish and fit when complete was amazing.
Door handles....
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc407/richardpaulh/IMG_0338.jpg
Now the interesting bits....NOT!
The running of the braided lines.
One tip.......if you're going to run a dry sump system you have 3 choices for running pipes through bulkheads
1. Get weld-on bulkhead fittings
2. Try and run a single pipe from front to back without bulkhead fittings.
3. Make a plate that you have all the bulkhead fittings welded to and fit this into the car.
Why???? I used bulkhead fittings with nuts and they were a fooookin nightmare!!!!! spanners both sides when trying to tighten things up!!!...huge mistake of which I will change in due course...maybe next year.
Apart from that... pipes look awesome.
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc407/richardpaulh/IMG_0337.jpg
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc407/richardpaulh/IMG_0335.jpg
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc407/richardpaulh/IMG_0334.jpg
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc407/richardpaulh/IMG_0348.jpg
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc407/richardpaulh/IMG_0349.jpg
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc407/richardpaulh/IMG_0350.jpg
Fitted the glass........love the turning quarters :D
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc407/richardpaulh/IMG_0340.jpg
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc407/richardpaulh/IMG_0339.jpg
And finally.....:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
I made a remote oil filter bracket plate that clamps between the inner wing. It's alloy and has a tapered clamping plate on the other side. Works really well and looks good.
http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc407/richardpaulh/IMG_0346.jpg
So there we are.... apart from having a broken ankle ....I've tried to make an effort :):):):)
