View Full Version : The 12sec "comfy" Evo 2 rebuild .

Well i decided to tweak the spec of the world famous 12sec "comfy" mk1 Escort early last year but progress has been very slow due to DIY projects + wifey taking all my money . I stripped the car of all it's mechanicals and then it's just sat there gathering dust for 12 months until now .
Plans for the new Evo 2 version include a new 202 thick wall pinto block to hopefully stop the blocks splitting at 8500+rpm and 230x Dyno-Dynamics bhp (265+ "coastdown" bhp) , 50 kilos less weight , a line lock for big burnouts at the drag strip , lower gearing for more acceleration , sort the 6 pot brakes out with different brake cylinder sizes , sort out the front crank trigger set up and change the suspension a bit with coil overs on the front etc .
Hoping to go sub 4.0secs to 60mph and low 12secs at 110+mph over a 1/4 mile whilst street driven and street legal . Should be possible so we'll see what the FIA approved clock says . :D
I'll post some pics up soon and all feedback is welcome . Cheers . :)

Looks like this , no changes to the outside are planned except i'm loosing the rs2000 badges and changing it to 1300 sport badges to upset the local supercars more when i overtake them . HA HA . :D

Bottom end now rebuilt into new 202 pinto block . Same bits and spec as before , cosworth standard stroke steel crank , Fardon "H" section conrods , 12:1 Accralite forged pistons , Titain dry sump system , steel flywheel and AP paddle cerametallic clutch , etc etc .
I used to have under piston oil spray jets but they've falled before and fell out so this time they've not been used . Just using the oil splashing about inside the engine too cool the piston crowns this time so hopefully it will be ok .
Simple install , no WCXM bollox that shakes the car too bits . Standard rs2000 rubber engine mounts and it drops straight into the bay in 5 mins . :)

I need to get some core plug blanks machined up as my old ones from the cracked 205 block are too big and that's about it for the bottom end . The heads all been rebuilt as well and is in the bedroom so i'll dig it out soon and take some pics before it fit it .
I had too wait 4 weeks for the WRC multi-shim headgasket to arrive from the USA as they are a special order on a 93mm bore but apart from that and the core plug blanks everything else as been readily available off the shelf . :)

Nice to see you getting it rebuilt Gaz :cool:when i built my n/a engine didnt use either spray jets in the block or the cossie pickup pipe and everything seems to be holding together with the oil just splashing around :D all the best and FULLSPEED AHEAD cheers Wullie :D

I've just checked with my mate in Canada, and he's never heard of it..........

mk1gaz
29-08-2011, 16:04
Should be back on the road by October hopefully but depends on if i have time really . I will probably sell it when the mk1 Cortina gets done but hopefully i can keep both . :)

not that i dislike cortina's!

mk1gaz
29-08-2011, 18:39
You'll like my mk1 cortina when it's done . It will look standard from the outside but have a 2.5 litre 9000+rpm all alloy 16v pinto with a Millington Diamond cylinder head etc etc and carbon panels so it's nice and light . Should go alright !!!!
I have alot of the engine parts already so another few years and i'll start to build the car up .

mk1gaz
01-09-2011, 00:20
Well before re-fitting the engine i decided to buffty up the x-member and steering system first .
Once i'd stripped it all out i noticed the steering column joint had roasted in the exhaust mainfold heat and looked a bit worse for wear . I decided to replace it incase it breaks in half but have lost the gp4 steering joint i bought a few years back so spent foooookin hours looking for it !!!!
Still no luck as yet but i found plenty of stuff too sell instead , lol . :D

I'm not going mad with the bufty bit . 1x can of satin black for the x-member and steering rack and that's about it . It's quite bufty looking normally except for all the dead flies splattered all over it . :)

Just been down the garage to fit the new steering bits and :

New 2.5 quick rack = check
New GP4 steering joint = check
2x New rs2000 mk2 track rod ends to fit rack = check
2x New alloy steering rack mounts = check
2x Locknuts for the trackrod ends onto new steering rack = Doh , bollox , foooooooooooooook !!!

Bloody typical , so i still can't fit it .

I bet we all have been in the same situation, frustrating isnt it.

mk1gaz
04-09-2011, 20:23
Sure is mate , sourcing all the little bits and bobs takes the most time up for sure .
Anyway the racks in now so i just need to fit the trackrod ends later on . Engine's in (bottom end) as well and dry sump pump and oil lines etc .
I couldn't push the car out the garage so had to lift the engine in by hand as the hoist hits the garage roof .
Me and a mate just lifted it straight in without a rope or pole etc . We covered the slam panel with a blanket and lifted the engine onto that , then in one swoop dropped it into the x-member . Very easy and much quicker than any other method , proper old skool . :D

Anyway a little update for all the yawners with slow motors . :D
Not done anything more as i need to go and collect the head gasket and that's down the south coast and i've not had time yet .
Maybe later this week if i can be arsed so until then , chill . :read2:

dont buy a head gasket from the south coast, just ask the 'yawner', he had awful troubles with the ones he got from down here :o

I'm not bored, just stop telling me who you met for nuts and how much drain plugs are. Do something big then write about it lol.

And as for headgaskets, avoid Elring

mk1gaz

The dry-sump drain plugs where £41 in the end with postage , £6 more than the last update so i thought i best tell Mr Bishop , lol . :D

Are you really going to stick with those engine mounts?

mk1gaz
16-09-2011, 18:42
Yep , used them for years and they work perfect . Not using a WCXM as the car drives like a washing machine with those shite things . :D

mk1gaz
17-09-2011, 19:52
Well i've just done a 150 mile trip to get the special order head gasket and when i get home and open the box it's wrong !!! Foooooooooookin typical , it's miles too thick and the wrong bore size . The Yank who posted that was smoking crack .
Fitting that will lose me 10-20bhp so sod that . Back too the drawing board then . :violent1:

mk1gaz
25-09-2011, 19:55
Well i managed to get a replacement head gasket off Ebay in the correct thickness so after work today i fitted the head . :)

Struggled like fooook on my own fitting the gearbox this afternoon but it's all fitted now . I must buy a bigger jack as crawling around with the car 12 inches off the floor is a nightmare . I almost gave up but swore at it whist jammed underneath and it went in , lol .
Hopefully i can do a few late nights down the garage after work this week too speed things up a bit and get it back on the road soon .

Cheers chaps . :)
Not done much of late except fitted a few bits to the block and then spent hours flushing out the old oil from all the pipe runs in the dry sump system .
The best way to do this is by spinning the dry sump pump with a drill with only the main oil line from the tank connected and then connect one pipe at a time and pump clean oil through each section at a time . Do this until it's gushing out the final pipe back at the main oil tank . That way you make sure each pipe is cleared and you relieve the boredom as you see some progress every few mins . I used cheap oil from Tescos at 12 quid for 4 litres for this task plus you can use it for running in the new engine as well .
Also when priming a dry sump oil system after a re-build/oil change always take off the cam cover and check that the oil is squirting out of the galleries up top as well as getting someone inside the car checking the oil pressure is ok . It's easy to get oil pressure sometimes but if the oil isn't fully up inside the head you're in trouble when you fire it up (head gasket back too front , sealer blocking a hole etc ,etc ) so always check .
Hope that helps anyone who's new to dry sump systems because when i first fitted mine i couldn't find out any decent info like that . :D

20-04-2012, 08:44
Ok folks , winter hibernation is over so i'm now back sorting the car for this seasons action .
Cam timing done , resprayed ex-manifold and fitted , throttle bodies on , coil pack in , re-done my crank trigger set up , bolt in core plugs machined down to fit the new block and fitted , new petrol hoses , etc .
Sent the cam cover off for a re-spray so just waiting for that too come back and then i can fire it up . BAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRP .
Then it's brake mods/alterations , new front anti-roll bar , lower front springs or coil overs (not sure yet) , bit of paintwork , take out the roll cage so my sons car seat can be fitted and then it's dyno testing etc . Hopefully more power than before = faster . :D

Limbo danced under the dash and got the bias-peddle box out today (poxy job ) . Adjusted the rod on the cylinder for the front brakes so that it now has 20mm more travel than before . This should get the front brakes clamping alot harder than before .
I need some braided hose and fittings etc so i can fit the electric line lock and then i'll set the brakes up on the MOT stations brake machine this time instead of just guessing .
I've been putting this job off since i built the car in 2006 so it's about time that i sorted it . :D

Wifey and the Tiny Terror have just gone out (result , lol) so i can cut the grass which is 1 foot long and then start fitting this before they get back . Pucker Hurst electric line lock kit but being American it's bound to have dodgey size imperial threads that nobody keeps anymore .

I was right about the threads  . Picked up some braided hose and a selection of fittings to plum in the line line lock and sort the brakes out . Fitted the line lock solenoid at the top of the inner "A"post and it fits good . Fitted the on/off switch onto the gear lever then made all the pipes up ready for fitting today .
Pics later and then low 12's next month . I can hear the tears already , lol . :D
