Had the car four weeks now, been on axle stands three and a half weeks, spent aprox 30 hours so far on the underneath, going through the ziebart and getting through to the factory underseal and primer, completed about 75%. Havent found any rot at all, both wells perfect, still retaining their factory underseal, and the masked off sections around the petrol tank sender and gauge sender and on the spare wheel bung, inside the chassis rails, around the tunnel, the paint is as good as on the car, outside of the rails where the factory underseal was, has now been removed, up to the edges of the outer seals, again perfect, have now gone right up to the bulkhead seam on both sides and again no rot at all, Today removed the nosecone, came off perfectly, sprayed every bolt with wd40 half an hour before i started, nothing broke, behind the nosecone its brilliant, no rot at all, not evern the light supports, no rot on the front valance at all, better than i could ever have expected, spent two hours on each of the lights taking apart and cleaning, all the interior is now in the loft, wrapped and put into one corner for safe keeping, have now removed rear bumper, spoiler, lights, petrol tank, badge and decals, YES, when i do sus out how to post pics, believe you me, i will, so far so good,

Just a short update, still working on the floor, although coming to the end now, thankfully, havent found anything nasty at all, have now reached right up to the bulkhead, the Ziebart is really thick and sticky here, using a heat gun is helping, but i keep burning my fingers !!, Have spoken to a recommended bodyshop that John Hughes put me onto, he can take the shell, late August, giving me plenty of time to remove the last few bits and the basic engine now that all ancillieres have been removed, She,s looking pretty sorry for herself at the mo, put i,m confident it wont be for too long before she,s on her way back, keep looking at the shell thinking, am i doing the right thing, and the same answer keeps coming back, YES, to take the car where i want to, this needs to be done,

Cheers Brian, i know they dont look that good, picking up engine block, manifold, heat shield and downpipe from Camcoat on Friday, will post the results soon after, dropping down into Stoke-on-Trent on the way back, to see the old girl, will take lots of pics, yesterday completed the cable set yesterday with a N.O.S. bonnet release cable, and thanks to Paul now have every clip for the car, brand new, was waiting for the alusive grey clutch clip. Paul came up trumps !! Thursday taking the diff to Coventry to be overhauled, the guy is going to take the diff out of the casing while i wait so i can bring it home to be powder-coated and then off to Birmingham to pick up my sound deadening pad !! sounds a good un, axle casing went to the powder -coaters yesterday, waiting for Gartrac to get back to me with the figures after my meeting with David last week, it was like Santa,s grotto down there !! felt like a kid in a sweet shop !! so all in all moving on towards the end result................., hopefully,

Update as of 22-12, I knew the car had been d/a,ed so i thought i,d do one of my round robin trips, up to Stoke-on-Trent for 8.30am, i was pleasantly surprised to find very little body filler in ********, a section on the top of the rear quarter, looks like something may have dropped on the car over the years, no damage to the light aperture or lower valance, other little knicks, nothing at all to worry about, wings, doors, bonnet and boot all fine, rear arches very sharp, very pleased, said my goodbyes and drove down to Coventry to drop my diff housing off, that,ll be built up and ready for beginning of Jan, drove down to Northampton to pick up my rebuilt gearbox, the first piece of "hardware" back, suddenly it dawned on me that it is slowly coming together, well pleased with the end result of the gearbox, all new A2 stainless bolts, polished reversing light sender, new gearbox plug, just need my gromits !!!!! arron
24-12-2005, 08:49
The level of effort and work you have put in though Ian, could you not have started with a car that was not in such good condition - after all it would not have mattered because all the bad bits would have been covered during the resto plus you might have ended up with a colour you preferred and a much cheaper starting point.

ian parker
24-12-2005, 09:28
Hi Arron, yes, your right, i have considered that, although when you think it through, what did i spend my 7k on. I spent it on a car thats done 57k, with every MOT from new, that had been owned for 23 years by one guy, that when stripped down hasn,t required any welding to the floor, hasn,t required any body panels and is 100% structurely, with the advent of Ebay, as you know anything with the letters RS attached to it is spiriling out of control, cars with no history, multiple owners and ROT are fetching alot of money, what additional value would you put on a car with such history ??, and a knowledge that it really hasn,t had a hard life, Also at the end of the day consider, you could end up spending alot more money replacing panels, parts, bits and more importantly still end up with a car with 11 owners, a couple of old MOT,s and a speedo reading whatever, what i,ll end up with (hopefully) is a stunning car with FULL HISTORY, 57k, Every MOT from new and a very genuine, honest car, however, i take your point on the colour !!!!!!!! lol,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, love it really ????

Funny you should say that! I was thinking more or less the opposite - there's hardly a single panel which hasn't got a repair on my shell and some bits are just slightly distorted with the repair panel (notably over the rear wheel arch). This means that, after years of work, I'll finally have basically a patched up and filled Escort! Looking at Ian's shell, I was just thinking how good it looks and, after all, he'll end up with a non-patched up shell when he finishes.

When I started off, the Internet hadn't been invented. It's just changed things sooo much. All of those tricky repairs which I did with self-fabricated bits can now be avoided with a mouse-click and a new panel.

Agree with you on the colour, though!

I guess 20-20 hindsight is on every Escort owners Christmas List!

Trickster
24-12-2005, 11:11
But was yours in desperate need of a resto dasadrew??

ian parker
24-12-2005, 15:30
thanks Arron, i made the decision sometime ago that it had been that colour for all those years, and i accepted the car in that colour, so who was i to change the colour, it really has grown on me and because there are so few in Tuscan, than it should remain that colour,

dasadrew
24-12-2005, 16:42
But was yours in desperate need of a resto dasadrew??

It started out just needing bits and bobs but I had to neglect it due to wife and house-building and it just got worse. If I had my time again, I'd have done a panel replacement job at the start because all the rest of the work (priming, painting, undersealing, parts installation, etc., etc.) remains the same and it just now seems a pity that all that is going on to a patchwork shell.

Lee, no panel repairs, there did end up being two very small bits underneath, that i felt needed to be nipped in the bud, as far as i know, thats it, there was a small crack in one of the seat supports, so the plate was taken off, welded, ground back, then the plate was welded back on, and where the outer seal meets the floor there was a small piece about half an inch long that was dealt with, i know now there is NO rust.

14-01-2006, 18:36
Just a small tip whilst the grille is off, paint the scuttle panel now. Then, after the grille is back on, you can cut some medium cardboard (cornflakes type) to the width of the grille slit and as long as possible. Then insert that through a slit so it covers the already painted scuttle panel. That way the scuttle panel stays nice and shiny and cleanable and doesn't get the paint spray which blasts past the grill louvres on it.

ian parker
20-01-2006, 23:20
Trickster, your right, it is my car, there are certain peoples opinions that i value, and if i was that bothered by others, then its fair to say i wouldn,t post any pics at all, the aim of the pics is to show people and for them to make comments surely ?? at the end of the day i would like the car to turn out as nice as it possibly can, and if that means being picked up by someones observations then so be it, i try to view these things positively, not negatively, please, if you see something that doesn,t look right, then tell me.

Thanks Brian for posting the pics. Getting the underneath "right" has been a headache, through looking at pics of my car, and other original car pictures and taking advice ive tried to get the look of how I think it should look, its fair to say no two cars were ever the same so its what i call an "interpretation", the most important thing now is that i know the underneath is 100% rot free and is protected. Trying to be a perfectionist, i struggled with the appearance yesterday if i,m honest, i keep trying to imagine a guy in 78' standing on the flow line with not a care in the world loosely aiming this stuff up and underneath the car, that would of been about it i think, once the two colours go on i,m sure it will come to life, theres about four more weeks to go, top coat, dove grey, and detailing the black, and then the fun begins !!

Guys, thankyou for the comments, muchly appreciated, Arron, NO is the answer, if i,m honest to myself it was that all along, Tim, just want to get her home now, in the airchamber, and then take my time, would like to spend this year looking at other cars, looking for detail, then hope to show her in the 07 season, as everyone keeps advising me "dont fall at the last hurdle," and dont build her to a time,

Ian, it's a great rebuild - I admire you for going to the lengths you have but........what's the point if you are never going to get behind the wheel on the open road and enjoy the car for what it was built to do ?

ian parker
15-02-2006, 17:29
Arron, its just one of those things, i respect everyone for what they do, i think it came down to finding what i considered to be the right car, and as ive touched on before, getting the right car not only meant the appearance but the history as well, i felt i had the right base to make a very good car and thats what i,m trying to achieve. As ive said before i would like to show her for a couple of seasons, see how i get on with the "show thing" and not necessarily the car, and then maybe think again, i like detail in anything, so thats what i,m going for, the detail, the detail just happens to be to a car that i was passionate about, like us all, twenty years ago when i was a kid,

Now that i can get back on the board, i,d like to say a BIG thankyou to Paul for the help and general support he gave me yesterday, and not only the 400 odd mile round trip and the unearthly time he got up. Yesterday was a day mixed with strange emotion, the car had been with them aprox four months, and my weekly trips had made it become a habit. Bolting bits on for the first time seemed strange, and to be honest not quite the pleasurable experience i,d imagined, however suddenly i started to get an idea of what it will look like, i do honestly think it looks better in the flesh than the pics taken yesterday, i do honestly want to forget about it for a week or two now, then add some more bits, again thanks for the comments and again a big thankyou to Paul Tamplin for his help, bearing in mind he does live 100 miles from my front door !!.

not been funny, but I found it easier to build the engine and box up onto the crossmember and lift it up into place,a lot less chance of accidents!:thumbright:

Ders, i was told there was no black paint on the front panel. we were going to put the engine in, however ive had second thoughts on the powder-coated sump and bell-housing, so i,m going to change them. i made a promise to myself, that if i wasn,t happy with a particular bit, it wouldn,t go on the car, Are there any other opinions on the black front panel ??

fantastic ian,i went to see a one owner 59,000 grp1 in glasgow on saturday,it had that orangey brown trim with black dash sidepanels and centre consol and it was tuscan beige too 1979 scottish motor show car,it had been fitted with a brown vynil as per customers instructions and he had all the paperwork to prove, but i didnt agree with his £7,000 valuation so walked away.he has since offered it to me for £6,000 but i think its too steep as per condition not mint and has had arches and spare wheel well done, not to my standard, also large door speakers and rear parcel shelve speakers, unused spare tyre cn36.hope to see you at cumbria mate

ian parker

Cheers Johnie, hope to get to Cumbria one way or the other, will be good to meet up with some of the guys, and to look at some cars hopefully, Nothing happening with the car at the mo, wanted a week or two to forget about it, then get stuck in, still require some special bits to finish off, no rush, get it done right,

Hi Joe, thanks for asking, as i put in an ealier post, i wasn,t happy with the results on the bell-housing, sump and mounts so they went back to be re-done. I,m picking them up Wednesday. To be honest, ive been working to replenish the pot and have put the old girl regrettably to one side, the engine will be back this week, Ive been doing little bits and pieces but until the basic engine goes in, i cant really do much more, need to get the wax-oiling finished off into the chassis rails and cavaties and thats about it really, the warmer weather will be here soon so i can really get stuck in, still sourcing little bits, still looking for the door handles, will take some more pics shortly. As for the swans Rab,i,m sure their very happy where they are !!

Aaron, Every single nut and bolt was re-passivated, every clip is brand new, every cable is nos Genuine Ford. Lenses and lights are mint. Because the car has only done 57k and had been garaged all its life its paying me back a little now, spoiler is untouched and very rubbery, all the glass is superb, trim is excellent, when i viewed the car originally i remember from days gone by, cars that had been left exposed to the elements suffered from faded needles on the dials, especially the rev counter, ******** are unfaded also more obvious things like the back of the rear seat, again, unfaded, also the heater strip is unmarked, so little bits, but important in my eyes are as they need to be. Vinny, no excuse,so i aint going to make one, will be with you shortly, promise. Rab, no rush, promise.
